the first symptom of a cold is usually a sore throat. this is generally followed by sneezing or a blocked, sore or runny nose. usually, 1 in 3 people with a cold will get a cough and feel unwell.

colds are caused by viruses. antibiotics cannot treat viruses. instead, drink plenty of liquids to replace those lost from sweating and runny noses. get lots of rest and eat healthily. do not ask your gp for antibiotics for a cold.

you will usually feel worse during the first 2 to 3 days before gradually starting to improve. your symptoms will usually last about a week.

cold and flu symptoms are similar but flu tends to be more severe.

  • appears gradually
  • affects mainly your nose and throat
  • makes you feel unwell but you're ok to carry on as normal - for example, go to work

causes of colds

colds are caused by viruses. they can easily spread to other people. you're infectious until all your symptoms have gone. this usually takes about a week.

colds are spread by germs from coughs and sneezes which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours.

to reduce the risk of spreading a cold you should:

  • wash your hands often with warm water and soap
  • cough into your elbow to stop germs getting on to your hands and spreading to other people
  • use tissues to trap germs when you cough or sneeze
  • bin used tissues as quickly as possible

how to prevent catching a cold

the best ways to avoid catching a cold are:

  • washing your hands with warm water and soap, especially before eating
  • not sharing towels or household items, like cups, with someone who has a cold
  • not touching your eyes or nose. you can infect your body if you've come into contact with the virus.
  • staying fit and healthy

Linda Straith hasn't added a story.

Hello Everyone, my name is Linda Straith, but I am also known as Earth Angel Granny in Northern Illinois,U.S.A.
I established & run a program called Earth Angels in Dec. 2004. I made a promise to God that if I survived the 2 1/2 yrs of combo treatment, I would find a way to give back to the community that was there for me. This year will be our 12th Christmas season! Altho I work with families year round, it is during the Christmas season that I really need help. We also utilize Facebook & Paypal in order to make it easier for everyone wanting to participate in a worthy cause. As of Jan 2011, our two major employers (printing plants) closed their doors. Leaving in our small rual community approx. 2000 people w/o jobs, and who have lost even more. In 2012, we managed to reach out to 972 children (62 children being from military families). Fast forwarding to 2016, we were able to reach out to 658 children ! Each year, the number changes, but the need is still there. I could not do what I do w/o everyone's help.I know times are tough all over, no one has gone untouched by todays economy. But I am asking to PLEASE help if you can.. To help bring a lil joy into the life of a child in need this coming holiday season. You can earn your Earth Angel wings by sponsoring a chilld for Christmas. With your contribution, he or she will know Santa didn't forget them after all. Our goal is to reach out to families in need currently residing in Ogle County, Illinois (but with your help, no family in need is ever turned away) that has "fallen through the system" somehow, and are unable to receive any kind of assistance, but could really use an Earth Angel assigned to them to make this a special Christmas after all.. Remember, the names I gather need your help, generosity & opened hearts for toys & donations to make this year a success! Remember, every time you hear a bell ring, an angel gets their wings...TOGETHER we can make Ogle County IL. and then some, the largest group of bell ringing Earth Angels once again this year!

Each Wednesday a dozen or so volunteers gather at Cares Hudson-Bayonet Point Enrichment Center. The group is called Cares Angels. Their mission: to stuff and sew small comfort dolls that will be given to children in a crisis, such as those involved in car accidents, those being hospitalized or those with cancer or heart ailments.

Picture an old-fashioned sewing bee where stitching and socializing are the order of the day. But the angels have a goal, and that is to complete 25 to 50 dolls a month.

When the dolls are done, Helen Greco and Lois Nims add the finishing touches and dress them in outfits they have made. From start to finish, including making clothes, each doll takes at least three hours, according to Greco.

Other Cares Angels _ Teresa Downing, Florence DeAngelo and Larry Olmstead _ paint toys made by the Toy Makers.

Jim McCullagh founded the Toy Makers more than 20 years ago. Health problems have forced him to relinquish some duties, although he is still involved.

Over the years, Toy Maker spokesman Tom Loughlin said, the group has made more than 180,000 toys for children being treated at the Shands teaching hospital and the Ronald McDonald House in Gainesville; the New Port Richey EMS, the Spring Hill and Pasco County EMS; Tampa Shriners Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and the Joshua House in Tampa; All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg and the Ronald McDonald houses in St. Petersburg and Tampa; and the Rosa Valdez Day Care Center in Tampa.

The wooden parts are cut out at the home workshop of Jim and Janet McGarr of Hudson. Jim, who was the chief toy maker, is now deceased, but Janet continues the tradition of providing refreshments for the group.

Loughlin and other Toy Makers _ Art Benner, Harry Shallcross, Don Hoge, Bruce Pahl, Ron Mishler and Gene Watson _ work the toy project every Wednesday and Friday. Once the angels paint the toys, the toys come back so the Toy Makers can install the wheels. The toys have no metal parts and are considered safe for young children. Loughlin said the toys are delivered to various facilities four times a year.

The toys and dolls are distributed by the nursing staffs.

"Because of the chance of infection, we rarely see a child but we get feedback and learn of the children's reaction on receiving a toy or a doll, and it is heartwarming. . . . It makes us want to go right back to work," Loughlin said.

Petite Floret Vase by Jill Weiner from the Earth Angels website

A round-up of just a few things  I’ve been browsing today . . .

A blast from the past: Jennifer Graney was my first-ever poetry editor. Back in sophomore year English class–with Mr. Madri–I’d scribble poems as fast as I could then pass them a few seats back and a row over for Jen to give them the once-over. She even helped me tighten up the (handwritten) screenplay–Danny and Christina Forever–I crafted for my one, my only Matt Dillon. (Er Matt, I’m still waiting to hear from you . . . . ) So grown-up Jen has changed her last name to O’Connor and her hair’s a lot shorter than it used to be, but she’s still a great editor! These days, however, she’s turned her editorial eye to curating a fabulous selection of folk art inspired toys, jewelry, collectibes, and more at her gallery store Earth Angels.

How soon can I move in? I saw this home office yesterday, and of course now I want to totally redo the corner of my bedroom that is my home office. I don’t plan to do any painting, but I think I will figure out how to invest in some low white shelving for my design books and poetry files and the like.

Back-to-school! A history of design lesson thanks to Design*Sponge. Everything you always wanted to know about Wedgewood . . . except, perhaps, how to afford a piece. Sigh . . . . Oh, if anyone tackles the DIY project, send me a pic, and I’ll post it. Promise! (thehomebeete[at]
