One person was arrested in a suspected DUI crash that left two people dead and another injured in Hemet early Saturday morning, police said.

A 21-year-old woman and her passenger were killed when 33-year-old Jesus Rios, of Downey, slammed his BMW into their Honda shortly before 4 a.m. on Florida Avenue near Kirby Street, the Hemet Police Department said in a news release.

A third person who was in the Honda was seriously injured but is expected to survive.

Investigators believe the Honda was stopped on Florida Avenue facing east for a red traffic signal when Rios continued driving on Florida without braking, and he rear-ended the Honda, police said.

Rios, who was not injured in the collision, allegedly tried to flee the scene on foot, “but a witness prevented his escape,” police said.

Officers arrived at the scene and arrested Rios on suspicion of driving under the influence, vehicular
homicide, and attempted hit-and-run.

Video from the scene showed a badly damaged Honda with its back crushed into the back seats. Nearby, a white BMW is seen stopped on the sidewalk with its front hood damaged and its windshield shattered.

Paramedics were pulling people out of the badly mangled Honda and transporting at least one young woman in an ambulance, video showed.

The names of those killed in the crash are not being released, pending notification of family members, police said.

Florida Avenue was closed in both directions from Gilmore Street to Sanderson Avenue for hours as investigators probed the scene.

A driver who died at the scene of a head-on collision in Hemet that left another motorist hospitalized may have been intoxicated when his car veered into oncoming traffic Saturday, police said Sunday, Feb. 28.

Preliminary investigation suggests a blue Ford Mustang moving north on State Street traveled into southbound lanes near South Village Loop, Hemet police said in a news release. It slammed into a silver Ford F-150 at about 3:19 p.m. Saturday.

The man behind the wheel of the Mustang died before he could be taken to a hospital. He was identified as Reef Crimson, 58, of Hemet, in a Riverside County Sheriff/Coroner Department news release.

The driver of the F-150 had to be freed from the wrecked truck, police said. That person was seriously injured, but expected to survive after undergoing surgery Saturday evening, HPD Lt. Eric Dickson said.

It was not immediately clear why Crimson’s vehicle traveled into oncoming lanes, police said. But evidence suggests he might have been under the influence of drugs at the time, Dickson said.

Authorities asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call HPD traffic investigators at 951-765-2400.
