Cities throughout San Bernardino County have canceled Independence Day fireworks shows in compliance with state and federal orders prohibiting large public gatherings that can spread the novel coronavirus.

One notable exception: Rancho Cucamonga. The city is going ahead with a fireworks display on July 4 but residents will not be allowed to gather in one place to watch the show.

Instead, the colorful pyrotechnics will be launched high above the city from Chaffey College, not from the Epicenter Stadium as in years past. The new location is more centrally located, enabling better visibility, city officials said.

The college will be locked and no spectators will be allowed on campus, officials said.

Instead, a 15-minute “Community Fireworks Show” will light up the skies above Rancho Cucamonga beginning at 9 p.m. July 4. Residents can look skyward and view the exploding fireworks from their own front or back yards, or drive to a better viewing site while remaining in their cars.

“We wanted to show how we can make this happen and still keep people within the safety of their homes,” said Jennifer Camacho-Curtis, city spokesperson.

She said the city and the City Council view the event as an alternative to cancellation.

“We felt it was important to celebrate the independence of our nation,” Mayor Dennis Michael said.

The city worked out an arrangement with Chaffey College to use its field as the launch site. The college is more centrally located than the Epicenter, Michael said, and will enable more residents to view the dazzling display.

The aerial pyro-display without a gathering was a way to help people celebrate safely during these difficult times, he said.

“It’s so we can give back to our community who’ve done such an amazing job of managing this COVID-19,” Michael added.

As part of a virtual celebration, Fontana is posting clips of past fireworks displays on its YouTube channel, the city’s website, Facebook page and on KFON-TV.

In Riverside County, the city of Menifee is holding a drive-thru fireworks event a week earlier, on the night of June 27, at Mt. San Jacinto College. The lot opens at 6 p.m. and the fireworks begin at 9 p.m.

Other Inland cities are asking residents to participate in patriotic activities from home. Upland and Moreno Valley are sponsoring Fourth of July home-decorating contests.

Upland residents can decorate the outside of their homes and submit a photo to Upland Recreation and Community Services. On June 25, the winners will be announced. The deadline for entries is noon June 24.

Rialto is allowing residents to buy safe and sane fireworks from local stands, though many other cities have outlawed use of such fireworks.

Yucca Valley and Arrowhead Lake Association have opted to postpone Independence Day fireworks until Labor Day weekend.
