The Year in Review, Part 5: Top Games, Items and Topics

2013 WaveIn 2013, ROBLOX surpassed 50 million registered accounts. Just a couple weeks ago, we saw more than 160,000 ROBLOXians logged in simultaneously. Needless to say, our bustling community creates more games, worlds, avatar accessories, and assorted media than any single person could ever hope to explore. Once in a while, a creation catches such fire that it becomes a trend – and the benefits snowball from there. In this article, we are looking back at all 365 days of 2013 to find out what user creations performed the best and resonated the most.

For a recap of the year from our team’s perspective, make sure to check out our four-part mini-series.

There are many things to do on ROBLOX, but if there’s one activity that unites almost everyone who participates, it’s playing the games. In this first section, we’ll dig into the most popular games of the year from multiple perspectives: most visited, top earning, most “favorited,” and highest rated.

Top 25 most visited games

A total of six games accumulated more than 10 million visits across the year, which is two more than there were in 2012. The list was capped by Paintball!, a long-successful competitive FPS with 2013 visits of almost 13.5 million and lifetime visits of more than 27 million. Congratulations to the game’s developer, daxter33, on the success.

Top 10 monetizing games (game passes, gear commissions and paid access)

This year we continued to diversify the available means of earning ROBUX, our virtual currency, while also further incentivizing game developers to pursue game monetization. This presented a new way for developers to gain visibility without necessarily having to rack up millions of game plays. Games that had success in this arena generally also have high-quality gameplay, which is exactly what we anticipated we’d see.

Top 5 features of 2013

  1. Dynamic lighting: this was not only a unanimously well-received feature, but a game changer. It dramatically affected the look of ROBLOX and opened many new building and gameplay possibilities.
  2. Outfits: being able to save and load different looks for your character with a couple clicks is a convenience that millions of ROBLOXians have already harnessed.
  3. Binary file format: this under-the-radar update created huge reductions in the file sizes of ROBLOX levels, which also means much shorter load/upload/test times.
  4. Impulse solver physics: a new approach to simulating physics collisions has improved ROBLOX’s performance when lots of parts are flying around in games.
  5. Developer Exchange: this is only a few months old in and we’ve already heard fantastic stories of hobbyist game developers supporting their lives and educations through ROBLOX.

The charts

Top games of summer 2014Summer is a busy time on ROBLOX. With school on hiatus for a large segment of our community, we see more gamers playing, more builders building, and more developers making games. The numbers don’t lie. Not only did we set a record for engagement time in July (with more than 65 million total hours logged), but in both June and July more than 12 individual games amassed one million+ play sessions. On top of that, players logged more than 130 million play sessions across all games in July.

Let’s take a look at the top-performing games of the summer (so far)!

The murder mystery is still unsolved

As you can see, there are several mainstays. The Mad Murderer, loleris’ biggest success to date, has collected a staggering 6.99 million play sessions in June and July alone (with a total of 12.5 million visits to date). His success is part business savvy, part content updates that revitalize the game just as soon as you think it’s going to slip, and largely a game that’s exciting and gratifying. You simply cannot deny the feeling of the knife-throw.

Chaos in The Mad Murderer

One of The Mad Murderer’s key differences is its cast of colorful characters.

Murder Mystery, The Mad Murderer’s primary competition, is also hanging tough – even moving up to third place in July – with a combined total of 3.6 million play sessions.

The perpetually popular role-playing game

Role-playing hangouts continue to make their presence known. Different Town of ROBLOXia, despite its own somewhat unassuming name, stayed firmly in second place in both June and July. Work at a Pizza Place continued its revival, while Boys Vs Girls Island Wars and Beach House Roleplay had strong showings.

Fresh blood

Guest Defense, ROBLOX’s Top Model, Reason 2 Die, 2 Player Gun Factory Tycoon, and Armored Patrol all found ways to make it to the summer top 15 lists. All of these games are worth noting because they feature similarly entertaining yet wildly different gameplay mechanics. From wave survival and fashion shows to military vehicle warfare and humans-versus-zombies, these games cover a huge range of gameplay – yet all of them have found legitimate success on ROBLOX. The gaming populous of ROBLOX has a wide variety of tastes, and just about any kind of multiplayer game can have a happy home in ROBLOXia.

Armored Patrol helicopters

Helicopters breathed new life into the class vehicle combat game Armored Patrol.

There’s more to game rankings than sheer play sessions. With the advent of Developer Stats, game creators can now see a more telling measure of how engaging their game is. We selected six games from the top 15 summer charts, representing a large swath of genres, and dug into their average playtime on Saturday, August 2nd to see what types of games hold players’ attention the best.

The Mad Murderer may get the most visits and, because of the volume of players, the most total playtime, but it actually doesn’t have the highest average playtime of the bunch. On August 2nd, its average playtime was roughly 17 minutes per session. Contrast that with the role-playing games — Work at a Pizza Place pulled over 20 minutes per session and Beach House Roleplay almost 24 minutes — and you can see how different audiences of gamers spend their time playing.

Reason 2 Die screenshot

Reason 2 Die pits player-controlled zombies against survivors.

In terms of hardcore games, both Reason 2 Die and Armored Patrol fared very well. Reason 2 Die kept players for an average of 23 minutes per play session, while Armored Patrol almost reached 25 minutes per session, which was, according to our small sample on August 2nd, the most engaging game of the bunch.

What you can extract from this information is that successful games command a lot of time from players, and there are many opportunities for developers to make it big — no single genre is a recipe for success or disaster. For more information on ROBLOX game development, make sure to check out the ROBLOX Wiki.

Those are the top summer games by the numbers. What games have you been spending your time playing?

As a user-generated content platform, the tides and trends of ROBLOX are largely dictated by our community’s tastes and preferences. That said, it’s always interesting to take a bird’s-eye view of the entire gaming ecosystem – and draw conclusions about what types of content are tripping players’ triggers. We pulled together game data for September and the first two-thirds of October; let’s see what is resonating among the community this fall.

With a massive update to the game’s mechanics, content, and visuals in mid-September, Work at a Pizza Place skyrocketed (at one time boasting more than 12,000 concurrent players) back up the charts and has remained one of the top games ever since. It’s not surprising – the game blends three things that are clearly popular among ROBLOXians: life simulations, social hangouts, and unpredictable, physics-based gameplay. The latest rendition of Work at a Pizza Place is high-quality, its creator Dued1 is earning money (to the tune of $20,000 in October alone) off it, and players love it.

Work at a Pizza Place screenshot

The esteemed Pizza Place.

Although it was only by a quarter of a million visits, that means Work at a Pizza Place dethroned the most visited game of the summer months, loleris’ The Mad Murderer. Still, The Mad Murderer held a firm grasp on the number-two slot, showing that the “murder-mystery” genre is still trending to this day. On that note, the genre’s newcomer, Twisted Murderer, was the fifth most visited game in September and October, racking up 2.2 million play sessions. The genre is alive and well.

There are a couple new games that quickly moved up the charts. Speed Run takes the concept of obstacle course to an all new level by drastically speeding up players’ movement speeds and progressing players through increasingly challenging levels. It’s something like Temple Run, in that it’s addictive and you always want to give it “just one more try,” but has a charm of its own in its simplicity. Super Bomb Survival came out of nowhere as the latest physics-based disaster survival game, only in this instance it’s raining bombs and TNT and homing missiles. We also saw a hint of Halloween creep into the ranks with the rise of Hospital Nightmare 3.

Of course, some games simply refuse to fade. Popular first-person shooters Call of ROBLOXia 5 and Paintball! continue to bring in players. Reason 2 Die, like the undead that inhabit it, just won’t go away. And the wild antics of disaster survival games like Natural Disaster Survival and Survive The Disasters continue to entertain.

Inside five top performing games

We took an inside look at the Developer Stats from top games representing a number of genres, from action to platformer to simulation to shooter. In particular, we were curious about what types of games tend to hold onto players longer than others. We looked at Work at a Pizza Place, Speed Run, Reason 2 Die, Super Bomb Survival!, and Call of ROBLOXia 5.

Reason 2 Die screenshot

Of these five, the games with the lowest average visit session were Speed Run (roughly 12 minutes) and Super Bomb Survival (about 15 minutes). Now, before you assume that means they’re lesser games, let’s pause and consider the types of games they are: quick, round-based platformers. These types of games are perfect for gamers who have limited time to play, and even gamers who are playing on the go via ROBLOX Mobile. (Super Bomb Survival is, in fact, one of the best mobile games out there.)

Of the remaining three, Reason 2 Die absolutely wins the “longest average play session” battle, with an average time of about 23 minutes. We recently chatted with that game’s developer, PlaceRebuilder, and could argue that the unlockables, seasonal events, rotation of maps, and ability to keep playing even when you’re eliminated as a survivor contribute to players staying so long.

ROBLOX game developers are, as always, doing amazing things — the multiple millions of gameplay sessions and quality of the most popular games are a testament to that statement. We can’t wait to see what other games make it into the top tier during the coming months.

When you’re in a game, concentrating on throwing knives or mining gems, it’s hard to step back and think about just how expansive ROBLOX is. But with 4.5 million active users each month, and a game library that could last you and all of your friends a lifetime, it’s quickly apparent that ROBLOX is huge. Now that 2014 has come to an end, we’ve had the chance to take a look at the numbers from December — and the year as a whole. The kinds of games that were popular on ROBLOX vary from hardcore action, to casual sims, and even games that redefine genres. We’ve compiled the numbers so you can see how many times the most popular ROBLOX games have been played. (Spoiler alert: a lot.)

Again, Dued1’s Work at a Pizza Place stands at the top, still riding its resurgence of popularity from the autumn redesign, and bolstered by its inclusion in the ROBLOX Holiday event. In fact, all of the ROBLOX Holiday games saw a significant boost in play sessions, including The Quarry, which snagged the number four spot.

The Quarry was one of the most played ROBLOX games of December.

The Quarry was one of the most played ROBLOX games of December.

The trio of popular murder genre games are back, but check out those numbers. Taymaster’s Twisted Murderer commanded a rather firm lead, with over 930,000 more visits than the next game on the list, loleris’ The Mad Murderer!

Keeping the trend of Speed Run games getting sequels faster than you can beat them, Speed Run 4 is in the number six spot. The Speed Run series is simple in concept, but its fast pace and gradual difficulty curve make it an excellent game for gamers of all types. It’s amusing to note that all four of the current Speed Run games are made by different developers. At this rate we’ll have Speed Run 19 by the end of 2015!

Now, let’s take a look at the top 20 games for the entire year.

It’s probably not a surprise to see The Mad Murderer topping the list. Since its release in April, The Mad Murderer has nearly always been on the front page of ROBLOX. Its impact on ROBLOX is clear, evidenced by banner ads and thumbnails inspired by it, as well as games that have used some of the monetization and structure that makes The Mad Murderer so successful.

But The Mad Murderer’s predecessor, Murder Mystery, is right up there too. With its sequel, it’s only been re-gaining in popularity. It’s awesome to see the murder game that started the year right back up there at the end of it.

The game credited with starting the “murder” craze is still alive and kicking!

Classics and new favorites

There’s a good smattering of games that were created this year in the top 20. Perhaps most impressive is Taymaster’s Twisted Murderer making the list despite being available for a mere four months. And DizzyPurple’s ROBLOX Top Model, a fun way to use catalog items in game, resonated with a large number of ROBLOX players with its unique gameplay.

Some of the games ROBLOX is best known for continue to stay popular. Natural Disaster Survival, Apocalypse Rising, Work at a Pizza Place, and Call of ROBLOXia continue to attract players in droves. All of those games are very different, but they have the same things in common: they’re fun, they’re high-quality, and they showcase the skills of ROBLOX’s talented developers.

Are your favorite ROBLOX games on the list? How many of these games have you played? If you’re ever wondering just what other ROBLOX players like you are enjoying, this list a good menu of what makes ROBLOX such a big gaming community. All of these games are huge successes, and so are the dozens and dozens that follow in the list. The 100th most popular game of the year, Hide n’ Seek XL, was played over 1.9 million times this year! That’s awesome.

Congratulations to the developers who made the awesome games that make ROBLOX fun, and thanks to you guys, the players, for continuing to make ROBLOX your gaming destination and supporting the developers’ hard work.

On vibrator entered the ass. Sasha let out a sigh of pleasure. Seeing this, Lera increased the pressure and frequency of movement. At first it was a little unpleasant, but the ass quickly got used to it and he already wanted more.

They all came out to see us off, brought things to the car, again kissed her on the lips, and one already in the parking lot sat. With Marinka in the car in the back seat and while the engine was warming up, first gave her in her mouth, then sat her ass on his dick, and finished in her mouth. We exchanged phone numbers, e-mails and, unfortunately, all good things come to an end.

I would love to repeat it.
