Moscow

This post lists the best free walking tours you can take in Moscow, including self-guided tours and small group tours.

WHAT ARE FREE WALKING TOURS?

There is no upfront cost or booking fee for these tours, but the companies do ask that you pay what you felt the experience was worth at the end.

These pay-what-you-like walking tours are very popular due to their convenience and affordability. They'll fit into every budget and tourists can find them in almost every city. This means that your tour group will likely be large, however.

For travelers who want to have tours with smaller groups of people, we recommend paid small group tours.

TIP: If walking through Moscow isn't your thing, hop-on-hop-off bus tours are a popular option for many visitors.

Utopian Soviet Buildings

Utopian Soviet BuildingsThe first tour with Virtual Reality experience. You will take a walk through the center of the city: Red square and around the Kremlin walls. Through the VR glasses you will see the most prominent utopian projects of the XXth century. With our best guides you will discover the Russian capital as it would look like if some of the audacious architectural dreams had come true. What you will see through the VR glasses:
  • The Palace of the Soviets instead of the Cathedral of the Christ the Saviour. It could have become one of the highest buildings in the world with a m Lenin statue on the top.
  • The eighth Stalinist skyscraper instead of the Zaryadye Park. It was supposed to be the tallest of all the Sisters.
  • The Narkomtiazhprom (the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry) building instead of the GUM. How would the Red Square look like with three skyscrapers or gigantic staircases going all the way up to the 16th floor?
  • The Palace of Labour instead of the Moskva Hotel. What was it, kind of a fantastic beast lying on the square or an ultimate Constructivist manifesto?
  • The alternative Lenin’s Mausoleum, the “Leningradskaya Pravda” buildings and many others.

"We partook of the fantastic Petersburg Free Tour. Due to our timing during the low season (shockingly not everyone is flocking to Moscow while the average temperature is 15F), it ended up being just us and Sonia, the afore-mentioned super-guide. She quickly ascertained the limited scope of our wanderings.."

A word from the Founder

Being from Moscow means living in crowded streets of a restless city of imperial age that has the bravado of the world's greatest and modern metropolis.

It is the land of writers, poets and thinkers, whose tireless hearts longed to seize and understand the complexity of Russian spirit in glorious moments of its triumph and dark hours of disgrace. Magnificent, contradictory, not properly understood (or truly beyond comprehension?) and just a little bit sinister, it is the Russian character that attracts all our interest and attention and rises new and interesting questions.

This reflects our desire to bring stories of past and present that have defined Moscow as a historic venue and click them all together like Lego bricks in order to grasp the bigger picture. The word History contains the word Story, and we invite you to be the part of this exciting walking tour into time travel.

With our guides’ candid, humorous and personal touches that make a new city feel like home, you will be entertained and educated without even noticing it. Just through fun and compelling stories!

It is our privilege to host and inspire you, so take a moment and enjoy this opportunity to pursue knowledge and experience in one of the most controversial and charming cities in the world.

This is a very special time in your life and we have worked very hard to ensure that among your most priced souvenirs there will be the strands of Russian culture you have chosen to knit into your own character.
