Quickstart examples for Rancher

Quickly stand up an HA-style Rancher management server in your infrastructure provider of choice.

Intended for experimentation/evaluation ONLY.

You will be responsible for any and all infrastructure costs incurred by these resources. As a result, this repository minimizes costs by standing up the minimum required resources for a given provider. Use Vagrant to run Rancher locally and avoid cloud costs.

Local quickstart

A local quickstart is provided in the form of Vagrant configuration.

The Vagrant quickstart does not currently follow Rancher best practices for installing a Rancher management server. Use this configuration only to evaluate the features of Rancher. See cloud provider quickstarts for an HA foundation according to Rancher installation best practices.

Cloud quickstart

Quickstarts are provided for Amazon Web Services (), Microsoft Azure Cloud (), Microsoft Azure Cloud with Windows nodes (), DigitalOcean (), and Google Cloud Platform ().

You will be responsible for any and all infrastructure costs incurred by these resources.

Each quickstart will install Rancher on a single-node RKE cluster, then will provision another single-node workload cluster using a Custom cluster in Rancher. This setup provides easy access to the core Rancher functionality while establishing a foundation that can be easily expanded to a full HA Rancher server.

Requirements - Cloud

  • Terraform >=
  • Credentials for the cloud provider used for the quickstart

Deploy

To begin with any quickstart, perform the following steps:

  1. Clone or download this repository to a local folder
  2. Choose a cloud provider and navigate into the provider's folder
  3. Copy or rename to and fill in all required variables
  4. Run
  5. Run

When provisioning has finished, terraform will output the URL to connect to the Rancher server. Two sets of Kubernetes configurations will also be generated:

  • contains credentials to access the RKE cluster supporting the Rancher server
  • contains credentials to access the provisioned workload cluster

For more details on each cloud provider, refer to the documentation in their respective folders.

Remove

When you're finished exploring the Rancher server, use terraform to tear down all resources in the quickstart.

NOTE: Any resources not provisioned by the quickstart are not guaranteed to be destroyed when tearing down the quickstart. Make sure you tear down any resources you provisioned manually before running the destroy command.

Run to remove all resources without prompting for confirmation.

Rancher AWS Quick Start Guide

The following steps will quickly deploy a Rancher Server on AWS with a single node cluster attached.

Prerequisites

Note Deploying to Amazon AWS will incur charges.

  • Amazon AWS Account: An Amazon AWS Account is required to create resources for deploying Rancher and Kubernetes.
  • Amazon AWS Access Key: Use this link to follow a tutorial to create an Amazon AWS Access Key if you don’t have one yet.
  • Install Terraform: Used to provision the server and cluster in Amazon AWS.

Getting Started

  1. Clone Rancher Quickstart to a folder using .

  2. Go into the AWS folder containing the terraform files by executing .

  3. Rename the file to .

  4. Edit and customize the following variables:

    • - Amazon AWS Access Key
    • - Amazon AWS Secret Key
    • - Admin password for created Rancher server
  5. Optional: Modify optional variables within . See the Quickstart Readme and the AWS Quickstart Readme for more information. Suggestions include:

    • - Amazon AWS region, choose the closest instead of the default
    • - Prefix for all created resources
    • - EC2 instance size used, minimum is but or could be used if within budget
  6. Run .

  7. To initiate the creation of the environment, run . Then wait for output similar to the following:

  8. Paste the from the output above into the browser. Log in when prompted (default username is , use the password set in ).

Result

Two Kubernetes clusters are deployed into your AWS account, one running Rancher Server and the other ready for experimentation deployments. Please note that while this setup is a great way to explore Rancher functionality, a production setup should follow our high availability setup guidelines.

Quick Start Guide


In this guide, we will create a simple Rancher install, which is a single host installation that runs everything on a single Linux machine.

Prepare a Linux host

Provision a Linux host with bit Ubuntu , which must have a kernel of +. You can use your laptop, a virtual machine, or a physical server. Please make sure the Linux host has at least 1GB memory. Install a supported version of Docker onto the host.

To install Docker on the server, follow the instructions from Docker.

Note: Currently, Docker for Windows and Docker for Mac are not supported.

Rancher Server Tags

Rancher server has 2 different tags. For each major release tag, we will provide documentation for the specific version.

  • tag will be our latest development builds. These builds will have been validated through our CI automation framework. These releases are not meant for deployment in production.
  • tag will be our latest stable release builds. This tag is the version that we recommend for production.

Please do not use any release with a suffix. These builds are meant for the Rancher team to test out builds.

Start Rancher Server

All you need is one command to launch Rancher server. After launching the container, we’ll tail the logs of the container to see when the server is up and running.

It will only take a couple of minutes for Rancher server to start up. When the logs show , the Rancher UI is up and running. This line of the logs is almost immediately after the configuration is complete. There may be additional logs after this output, so please don’t assume it will be the last line of the logs upon initialization.

Our UI is exposed on port , so in order to view the UI, go to . If you are running your browser on the same host running Rancher server, you will need to use the host’s real IP, like and not or .

Note: Rancher will not have access control configured and your UI and API will be available to anyone who has access to your IP. We recommend configuring access control.

Add Hosts

For simplicity, we will add the same host running the Rancher server as a host in Rancher. In real production deployments, we recommend having dedicated hosts running Rancher server(s).

To add a host, access the UI and click Infrastructure, which will immediately bring you to the Hosts page. Click on the Add Host. Rancher will prompt you to select a host registration URL. This URL is where Rancher server is running and must be reachable from all the hosts that you will be adding. This is useful in installations where Rancher server will be exposed to the Internet through a NAT firewall or a load balancer. If your host has a private or local IP address like , Rancher will print a warning asking you to make sure that the hosts can indeed reach the URL.

For now you can ignore these warnings, we will only be adding the Rancher server host itself. Click Save. By default, the Custom option will be selected, which provides the Docker command to launch the Rancher agent container. There will also be options for cloud providers, which Rancher uses Docker Machine to launch hosts.

In the UI, it provides instructions of the ports that need to be open on your host as well as some optional information. Since we are adding a host that is also running Rancher server, we need to add the public IP that should be used for the host. One of the options provides the ability to input this IP, which automatically updates the custom command with an environment variable.

Run this command in the host that is running Rancher server.

When you click Close on the Rancher UI, you will be directed back to the Infrastructure -> Hosts view. In a couple of minutes, the host will automatically appear.

Infrastructure services

When you first log in to Rancher, you are automatically in a Defaultenvironment. The default cattle environment template has been selected for this environment to launch infrastructure services. These infrastructure services are required to be launched to take advantage of Rancher’s benefits like dns, metadata, networking, and health checks. These infrastructure stacks can be found in Stacks -> Infrastructure. These stacks will be in an state until a host is added into Rancher. After adding a host, it is recommended to wait until all the infrastructure stacks are before adding services.

On the host, the containers from the infrastructure services will be hidden unless you click on the Show System checkbox.

Create a Container through UI

Navigate to the Stacks page, if you see the welcome screen, you can click on the Define a Service button in the welcome screen. If there are already services in your Rancher set up, you can click on Add Service in any existing stack or create a new stack to add services in. A stack is just a convenient way to group services together. If you need to create a new stack, click on Add Stack, provide a name and description and click Create. Then, click on Add Service in the new stack.

Provide the service with a name like “first-service”. You can just use our default settings and click Create. Rancher will start launching the container on the host. Regardless what IP address your host has, the first-container will have an IP address in the range as Rancher has created a managed overlay network with the infrastructure service. This managed overlay network is how containers can communicate with each other across different hosts.

If you click on the dropdown of the first-container, you will be able to perform management actions like stopping the container, viewing the logs, or accessing the container console.

Create a Container through Native Docker CLI

Rancher will display any containers on the host even if the container is created outside of the UI. Create a container in the host’s shell terminal.

In the UI, you will see second-container pop up on your host!

Rancher reacts to events that happen on the Docker daemon and does the right thing to reconcile its view of the world with reality. You can read more about using Rancher with the native docker CLI.

If you look at the IP address of the second-container, you will notice that it is not in the range. It instead has the usual IP address assigned by the Docker daemon. This is the expected behavior of creating a Docker container through the CLI.

What if we want to create a Docker container through CLI and still give it an IP address from Rancher’s overlay network? All we need to do is add a label (i.e. ) in the command to let Rancher know that you want this container to be part of the network.

Create a Multi-Container Application

We have shown you how to create individual containers and explained how they would be connected in our cross-host network. Most real-world applications, however, are made out of multiple services, with each service made up of multiple containers. A LetsChat application, for example, could consist of the following services:

  1. A load balancer. The load balancer redirects Internet traffic to the “LetsChat” application.
  2. A web service consisting of two “LetsChat” containers.
  3. A database service consisting of one “Mongo” container.

The load balancer targets the web service (i.e. LetsChat), and the web service will link to the database service (i.e. Mongo).

In this section, we will walk through how to create and deploy the LetsChat application in Rancher.

Navigate to the Stacks page, if you see the welcome screen, you can click on the Define a Service button in the welcome screen. If there are already services in your Rancher set up, you can click on Add Stack to create a new stack. Provide a name and description and click Create. Then, click on Add Service in the new stack.

First, we’ll create a database service called and use the image. Click Create. You will be immediately brought to a stack page, which will contain the newly created database service.

Next, click on Add Service again to add another service. We’ll add a LetsChat service and link to the database service. Let’s use the name, , and use the image. In the UI, we’ll move the slider to have the scale of the service to be 2 containers. In the Service Links, add the database service and provide the name . Just like in Docker, Rancher will link the necessary environment variables in the image from the linked database when you input the “as name” as . Click Create.

Finally, we’ll create our load balancer. Click on the dropdown menu icon next to the Add Service button. Select Add Load Balancer. Provide a name like . Input the source port (i.e. ), select the target service (i.e. web), and select a target port (i.e. ). The web service is listening on port . Click Create.

Our LetsChat application is now complete! On the Stacks page, you’ll be able to find the exposed port of the load balancer as a link. Click on that link and a new browser will open, which will display the LetsChat application.

Create a Multi-Container Application using Rancher CLI

In this section, we will show you how to create and deploy the same LetsChat application we created in the previous section using our command-line tool called Rancher CLI.

When bringing services up in Rancher, the Rancher CLI tool works similarly to the popular Docker Compose tool. It takes in the same file and deploys the application on Rancher. You can specify additional attributes in a file which extends and overwrites the file.

In the previous section, we created a LetsChat application with a load balancer. If you had created it in Rancher, you can download the files directly from our UI by selecting Export Config from the stack’s dropdown menu. The and files would look like this:

Download the Rancher CLI binary from the Rancher UI by clicking on Download CLI, which is located on the right side of the footer. We provide the ability to download binaries for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

In order for services to be launched in Rancher using Rancher CLI, you will need to set some environment variables. You will need to create an account API Key in the Rancher UI. Click on API -> Keys. Click on Add Account API Key. Provide a name and click Create. Save the Access Key and Secret Key. Using the Rancher URL, Access Key and Secret Key, configure the Rancher CLI by running .



Now, navigate to the directory where you saved and and run the command.



In Rancher, a new stack will be created called NewLetsChatApp with all of the services launched in Rancher.

Quick Start

If you have a specific RanchersOS machine requirements, please check out our guides on running RancherOS. With the rest of this guide, we’ll start up a RancherOS using Docker machine and show you some of what RancherOS can do.

Launching RancherOS using Docker Machine

Before moving forward, you’ll need to have Docker Machine and VirtualBox installed. Once you have VirtualBox and Docker Machine installed, it’s just one command to get RancherOS running.

That’s it! You’re up and running a RancherOS instance.

To log into the instance, just use the command.

A First Look At RancherOS

There are two Docker daemons running in RancherOS. The first is called System Docker, which is where RancherOS runs system services like ntpd and syslog. You can use the command to control the System Docker daemon.

The other Docker daemon running on the system is Docker, which can be accessed by using the normal command.

When you first launch RancherOS, there are no containers running in the Docker daemon. However, if you run the same command against the System Docker, you’ll see a number of system services that are shipped with RancherOS.

Note: can only be used by root, so it is necessary to use the command whenever you want to interact with System Docker.

Some containers are run at boot time, and others, such as the , , etc. containers are always running.

Using RancherOS

Deploying a Docker Container

Let’s try to deploy a normal Docker container on the Docker daemon. The RancherOS Docker daemon is identical to any other Docker environment, so all normal Docker commands work.

You can see that the nginx container is up and running:

Deploying A System Service Container

The following is a simple Docker container to set up Linux-dash, which is a minimal low-overhead web dashboard for monitoring Linux servers. The Dockerfile will be like this:

Using the image, which uses a Busybox image and installs and . We downloaded the source code of Linux-dash, and then ran the server. Linux-dash will run on port 80 by default.

To run this container in System Docker use the following command:

In the command, we used to tell System Docker not to containerize the container’s networking, and use the host’s networking instead. After running the container, you can see the monitoring server by accessing .

System Docker Container

To make the container survive during the reboots, you can create the script, and add the Docker start line to launch the Docker at each startup.

Using ROS

Another useful command that can be used with RancherOS is which can be used to control and configure the system.

RancherOS state is controlled by a cloud config file. is used to edit the configuration of the system, to see for example the dns configuration of the system:

When using the native Busybox console, any changes to the console will be lost after reboots, only changes to or will be persistent. You can use the command to switch to a persistent console and replace the native Busybox console. For example, to switch to the Ubuntu console:

RancherOS is a simple Linux distribution ideal for running Docker. By embracing containerization of system services and leveraging Docker for management, RancherOS hopes to provide a very reliable, and easy to manage OS for running containers.

Quick Start Outline

This Quick Start Guide is divided into different tasks for easier consumption.

  1. Provision a Linux Host

  2. Install Rancher

  3. Log In

  4. Create the Cluster

1. Provision a Linux Host

Begin creation of a custom cluster by provisioning a Linux host. Your host can be:

  • A cloud-host virtual machine (VM)
  • An on-prem VM
  • A bare-metal server

Note: When using a cloud-hosted virtual machine you need to allow inbound TCP communication to ports 80 and Please see your cloud-host’s documentation for information regarding port configuration.

For a full list of port requirements, refer to Docker Installation.

Provision the host according to our Requirements.

2. Install Rancher

To install Rancher on your host, connect to it and then use a shell to install.

  1. Log in to your Linux host using your preferred shell, such as PuTTy or a remote Terminal connection.

  2. From your shell, enter the following command:

Result: Rancher is installed.

3. Log In

Log in to Rancher to begin using the application. After you log in, you’ll make some one-time configurations.

  1. Open a web browser and enter the IP address of your host: .

    Replace with your host IP address.

  2. When prompted, create a password for the default account there cowpoke!

  3. Set the Rancher Server URL. The URL can either be an IP address or a host name. However, each node added to your cluster must be able to connect to this URL.

    If you use a hostname in the URL, this hostname must be resolvable by DNS on the nodes you want to add to you cluster.

4. Create the Cluster

Welcome to Rancher! You are now able to create your first Kubernetes cluster.

In this task, you can use the versatile Custom option. This option lets you add any Linux host (cloud-hosted VM, on-prem VM, or bare-metal) to be used in a cluster.

  1. From the Clusters page, click Add Cluster.

  2. Choose Existing Nodes.

  3. Enter a Cluster Name.

  4. Skip Member Roles and Cluster Options. We’ll tell you about them later.

  5. Click Next.

  6. From Node Role, select all the roles: etcd, Control, and Worker.

  7. Optional: Rancher auto-detects the IP addresses used for Rancher communication and cluster communication. You can override these using and in the Node Address section.

  8. Skip the Labels stuff. It’s not important for now.

  9. Copy the command displayed on screen to your clipboard.

  10. Log in to your Linux host using your preferred shell, such as PuTTy or a remote Terminal connection. Run the command copied to your clipboard.

  11. When you finish running the command on your Linux host, click Done.

Result:

Your cluster is created and assigned a state of Provisioning. Rancher is standing up your cluster.

You can access your cluster after its state is updated to Active.

Active clusters are assigned two Projects:

  • , containing the namespace
  • , containing the , , , and namespaces

This guide will help you quickly launch a cluster with default options.

New to Kubernetes? The official Kubernetes docs already have some great tutorials outlining the basics here.

Prerequisites¶

Make sure your environment fulfills the requirements. If NetworkManager is installed and enabled on your hosts, ensure that it is configured to ignore CNI-managed interfaces.

Server Node Installation¶


RKE2 provides an installation script that is a convenient way to install it as a service on systemd based systems. This script is available at https://get.rke2.io. To install RKE2 using this method do the following:

1. Run the installer¶

This will install the service and the binary onto your machine.

2. Enable the rke2-server service¶

3. Start the service¶

4. Follow the logs, if you like¶

After running this installation:

  • The service will be installed. The service will be configured to automatically restart after node reboots or if the process crashes or is killed.
  • Additional utilities will be installed at . They include: , , and . Note that these are not on your path by default.
  • Two cleanup scripts will be installed to the path at . They are: and .
  • A kubeconfig file will be written to .
  • A token that can be used to register other server or agent nodes will be created at

Note: If you are adding additional server nodes, you must have an odd number in total. An odd number is needed to maintain quorum. See the High Availability documentation for more details.

Linux Agent (Worker) Node Installation¶

1. Run the installer¶

This will install the service and the binary onto your machine.

2. Enable the rke2-agent service¶

3. Configure the rke2-agent service¶

Note: The process listens on port for new nodes to register. The Kubernetes API is still served on port , as normal.

4. Start the service¶

Note: Each machine must have a unique hostname. If your machines do not have unique hostnames, set the parameter in the file and provide a value with a valid and unique hostname for each node.

Windows Agent (Worker) Node Installation¶

Windows Support is currently Experimental as of v+rke2r1Windows Support requires choosing Calico as the CNI for the RKE2 cluster

0. Prepare the Windows Agent Node¶

Note The Windows Server Containers feature needs to be enabled for the RKE2 agent to work.

Open a new Powershell window with Administrator privileges

In the new Powershell window, run the following command.

This will require a reboot for the feature to properly function.

1. Download the Install Script¶

This script will download the Windows binary onto your machine.

2. Configure the rke2-agent for Windows¶
