Features and Cooler Specifications

Corsair has lifted the cover on their new line of RGB coolers, with their 240 AIO model being christened the Corsair H100i RGB Platinum.  As expected, the pump housing and each of the 120mm fans provide multiple LED RGB lighting effects aimed at providing a user-controlled, lighting environment inside your PC case.

Unfortunately, Corsair’s focus on providing RGB ambiance and flair with the H100i RGB Platinum doesn't make up for otherwise lackluster cooling performance that is easily bested by the H110i RGB Platinum’s sibling, the H100i Pro at a fraction of the cost.

Intel and AMD fans can rejoice in the fact that the H100i RGB Platinum’s standard mounting kit supports hardware options for every current-generation CPU, including Threadripper. Previously, most AIO coolers have had minimal (or no) support for AMD socket TR4, and if it did it was typically only as an add-on. The included micro-B USB cable that interfaces the H100i RGB Platinum to the PC is only viable as a 9-pin USB motherboard header; there is not a 9-pin to USB Type-A adapter to connect with a typical USB port, although one could be sourced if you look hard enough.

The distinct, blocky pump housing with the silver and black color scheme and back-lit Corsair logo is the central focus of the H100i RGB Platinum, and while the pump is technically PWM controlled, it can only be managed from the Corsair iCUE software suite via the supplied micro-USB cable. As expected, RGB lighting controls, thermal monitoring and firmware are also driven over USB through Corsair’s iCUE user interface (UI).

The base of the H100i RGB Platinum is milled from copper with a smooth, satin finish and a splotch of pre-applied thermal compound, although we’ve cleaned it for better visual representation of the block mating surface (above). The pair of 90-degree swivel fittings allow some flexibility to block orientation and tube routing during installation.

The H100i RGB Platinum’s mounting plate system is a snap-fit solution. Each socket bracket pair slides around a channel groove in the block base and secures the pump base to the mounting hardware. Swapping these plates out simply requires sliding the existing bracket plates apart and away from the block and then snapping the selected ones back in.

The H100i RGB Platinum has the basic look and feel of most 240 AIO coolers in the Corsair armada: a 240mm all-aluminum radiator, black-sleeved tubing and two 120mm ML120 fans, although this time those fans are equipped with RGB LEDs. Although they sport 4-pin RGB connectors, they don’t work well with most traditional 4-pin male or female adapters, as Corsair seems intent on keeping their lighting ecosystem relatively exclusive.

As with most 240 AIOs, the Corsair H100i RGB Platinum is compatible with most PC cases that support a 2x 120mm radiator. Radiator and block installation were relatively problem-free and nearly identical to every AIO we’ve installed, which makes routing the fan, USB and RGB cabling the only portion of the cooler setup that required any real focus. Cable management not only looks tidy but also prevents chassis airflow interference for ideal thermal regulation.

Corsair’s iCUE software provides a graphical UI to allow management of all detected Corsair peripherals and components, ranging from customized color palettes and patterns, to fan curve profiles, pump management and even the device firmware update that provided us a bit of a higher pump speed on the Extreme setting.

Corsair Hydro Series H100i PRO Low Noise 240mm RGB Water/Liquid CPU Cooler 240mm (CW-9060033-WW) Support Intel LGA 1200, 2066, AMD AM4

Pros: The Corsair H100i Pro RGB is a 240mm all-in-one (AIO) CPU cooler where the pump, coolant, and radiator and one sealed unit. This makes for a very clean and very simple (almost tool free sans mounting the radiator in your case) install that will perform over air coolers. What’s unique about the H100i is the inclusion of 2 very nice 120mm magnetic levitation fans that are PWM based. The maglev fans offer a very quiet mechanical operating envelop (you won’t hear these things). The only sound that the fans will make is the sound of the air they are moving when they’re powered on. Speaking on powered on, the H100i can shut down the fans altogether if the coolants temp stays below 40 degrees C, and you enable this functionality in the included Corsair control software. Based on your cooling setup in your PC and the ambient air temp this is achievable – the pump itself is silent and cannot be heard even with the case open and sitting near you. All modern sockets are supported – Intel sockets LGA1151, 1150, 1155, 1156, 1366, 2011, 2066; AMD sockets AM2, AM2+, AM3, AM3+, AM4, FM1, FM2, FM2+. The fans are two 120mm ML series PWN fans that can spin up to 2400rpm and will move 75 CFM of air (fan speed can be auto-controlled via the Corsair software). The CPU block itself is a copper bottom and extremely smooth (I see no need to lap it manually). LED color control on the pump head is possible via the Corsair software and can be set to whatever preference you like. The 240mm radiator is a matte black aluminum and quite thin in profile. It will attract fingerprints so wipe down if a super-clean look is what you want. The coolant tubes are covered in a black braiding which gives it a professional, clean look. Unfortunately, the pump power is not braided. The Corsair Link software allows a very nice interface for monitoring the cooler performance and tweaking the performance settings and cosmetic settings.

Cons: AMD Threadripper sTR4/SP3 sockets are not supported. The fans under full load and at full 2400 rpm pump out 37 dBA (which is noticeable, but not overwhelming). The USB-looking cable that needs to be plugged into the CPU cooler itself is right-angled but still occupies some space – some smaller form factor mobos might have clearance issues and the cosmetic factor of this additional cable sticking out is not attractive (there’s no clean way to route it as it comes directly off the cooling block itself).

Overall Review: Thermal compound is pre-applied to the CPU block itself – I’m unsure on the exact brand Corsair uses or rebrands for their own use. Maglev fans are made to last so expect very long life out of them as the ‘bearing’ is a magnetic field (no mechanical parts touching). Performance will vary based on a ton of factors but the general assumption on AIO coolers is that they perform in the range of some of the best heat-piped based air-only coolers. The price, quality look and feel, ease of install, customization, and price point make the H100i a solid AOI for any build in which you don’t want to invest the time and money in a full-blown liquid cooling solution (separate reservoir, tubing, rads, pumps, etc.)

Now discussing:

Corsair's pretty 240mm AiO cooler is going cheap on Amazon UK

Liquid CPU coolers are all the rage these days, as they look neat and provide the sort of excellent cooling performance you'd normally only get out of an oversized air cooler. Corsair make some of the best AiOs in the business, and today their (draws breath) iCue H100i Pro XT RGB 240mm CPU cooler (phew) is going cheap. It debuted at £115 and normally costs £90, but today you can pick it up for the relative bargain price of £72.

240mm AiOs are a good choice as they fit in most mid-size cases, and are also a common target for even compact Mini ITX cases like the Cooler Master NR200P. The cooling performance is equivalent to a high-end air cooler, like the Noctua NH-D15 or Scythe Fuma 2, but the larger heatsink allows the card to soak up temporary loads a bit better than an air cooler can - put simply, there's more here that needs to get hot before the fans on the heatsink need to spin up to keep temperatures in check. That could make the AiO quieter at a given temperature, or cooler at a given noise level, although this does depend a lot on your case layout and other factors.

What is without question is that the H100i Pro XT is a good cooler - I used a similar model for many years on the Digital Foundry test rig, for instance - and the AiO has gotten quite positive reviews since it launched back in early 2020. £72 is a great price, given that the cooler has retailed for over £100 for most of its life, and of course it'll sychronise nicely with other Corsair gear you may have, like cases, fans, RAM and peripherals.

By the way, if you're in the market for a case, the excellent Corsair 4000D Airflow is also being discounted right now, this time on Ebuyer. The black model costs just £47 (down from £80) while the white model costs a bit more at £50. Either way, you're getting a top-notch case with an emphasis on thermals and usability.

That's all for now, so stay tuned and thanks for reading the RPS deals!
