This is certainly the best Am3+ motherboard on the market today. The ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z has been able to stand the test of time and the scrutiny of others.

For a few different CPUs and systems, it has quickly become the standard. With a good quality build, you will be able to use it for a long time and even recycle it into new cases. The color scheme is absolutely gorgeous, and if you have a clear case, you will be happy to show it off.

If you are an audiophile, this is absolutely going to be the best motherboard on the list. The onboard audio solution is so perfect that you almost won’t need an audio card unless you are a professional music producer. What really sets this motherboard apart from its competition on this list is its far superior performance.

You will be able to push your system and overclock it almost as much as you want. It will handle it. Even better, you will be able to make use of the “Fault Finding” technology that will help you to sort out any problems you may have.

This is a great motherboard for Am3+, but it isn’t going to be the perfect motherboard for everyone and in all situations. The temperature and voltage probe points aren’t the best located, and they may even impede some builds. You will be somewhat limited in how you can configure everything.

When you look at user reviews, it is always common to see some problems, but not with this one. Almost everyone who has purchased it has said they’ve been very happy with their purchase.

This is going to be the best Am3+ motherboard for the money, and it doesn’t cost as much as some of the other items on this list. It has an amazing energy-saving mode which will not only help when you are overclocking, but it will help to keep your motherboard young.

This motherboard was developed for gamers who need serious power and overclocking capabilities but nothing too fancy or out of the ordinary. It will play most levels of games quite well, with maybe a few problems overclocking on bigger and heavier titles.

The ASRock 760GM-HDV is a good motherboard that has seemed to go unnoticed by so many people within the gaming world. If you get this one, you may need to do some extra work here and there, but you are going to be fairly happy with the purchase you made.

As mentioned, this isn’t going to be the best-known motherboard. However, it does come packed with a solid capacitor design which will keep it moving for a long time. It also has support for Socket AM3+ / AM3 Processors and 8-Core CPU, which makes it pretty powerful.

The connectivity is great as well, with 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16, 1 x PCIe 2.0 x1, 4 x SATA2, and 8 x USB 2.0 (4 Front, 4 Rear). You will be hard-pressed to find a motherboard with that much connectivity in this price range.

As far as looks go, it is pure black, which is striking and a bit mysterious. The black is darker than most other “blacks” used in motherboards, so if you are looking for something that will play well with RGB lights and accessories, this is a good choice. The design also protects the motherboard against electrical shorts caused by humidity, making it a good option for someone who lives in a warmer climate.

For audiophiles, you won’t find a better motherboard. It has 7.1 CH HD Audio (Realtek ALC887 Audio Codec) and ELNA audio capacitors. These powerful pieces of tech will reduce the noise level and help to pick up on all the bass notes and lyrics of your music.

Of all the motherboards on this list, this one is going to be the hardest to find for some people. Your best bet may be to go to any of the traditional retailers and see if you can get it there. You may even consider looking for resale machines.

If you are looking to overclock when you play some of the heavy-hitting games, this is going to be your best option for a motherboard for Am3+. You can push this motherboard much further than you may be used to and it will still stay stable.

Part of this is because of the technology, and an even bigger part is because ASRock has such high-quality parts. This could even be a display motherboard with the black-and-gold color scheme which makes it stand out.

When you use this motherboard in your build, you will be able to reach pretty high CPU speeds and not have to worry about cooling, as the built-in system is great. If you are willing to add your own cooling system into the mix, you will be able to push it even further.

For those who are more advanced in building their own PCs, ASRock’s UEFI is extremely user-friendly, and entering the BIOS is easy to do as well. If you want to expand or personalize your machine, there are eight USB 3.0 ports are present, four of which are available via internal headers, and you will use them. All of them work extremely well and allow for tight fits.

  • What’s Wrong

There are some slight glitches when you are overclocking. They are only random and don’t occur all that often. Most importantly, they are fairly easy to work out, but they can be annoying in the long-term if you aren’t willing to figure them out.

The BIOS settings are a bit conservative compared to some other boards, even those from ASRock. Finally, only three BIOS setting profiles can be saved.

This is a good motherboard for Am3+ if you are looking to start somewhere and continue to expand it. You may have to work at it, but it will be worth it in the end.

8 of the best AM3 motherboards

The motherboard is the foundation for everything your PC is and does. It defines not only its current functionality and long-term viability. It also has a huge impact on performance.

With that in mind, this motherboard mélange is a snapshot of the best currently on the market in terms of AMD-compatible boards.

The good news is that the choice is simple. For starters, the CPU socket is a no brainer. If you're building a new PC, you want AM3. Likewise, the number of relevant chipsets is on the wane. Since AMD bagged ATI, AMD has become arguably the only major player in performance desktop chipsets that is compatible with its own CPUs.

Yes, Nvidia still has the nForce 980a SLI. But not only is that chipset well over a year old, the northbridge chip at its heart is a rebadge of the even more ancient 780a SLI. It's not clear what Nvidia's plans are for the future of its AMD chipset business.

But currently if you want a modern and up to date mobo, AMD's latest 8 series chipsets are where it's at. As for which specific chipset and board to go for, it all comes down to use.

Intriguingly, dual-link DVI is now available with some integrated boards based on the 800 series. This means you can drive a 30-inch panel without the need for a discrete video card. That is, if gaming performance isn't your number one priority.

Finally, storage and peripheral bandwidth are increasingly important. Most AMD 8 Series mobos support SATA II 6Gbps. However, USB 3.0 isn't native to the 8 Series and support depends on mobo makers adding a dedicated controller. Certainly something to look out for.

ASRock 880GMH USB3

Fact: When it comes to CPUs, AMD makes cheapo chips. Would it prefer to sock it to Intel at the more profitable end of the market? You're damn tootin', it would.

But until its all-new Bulldozer processor rocks up next year, AMD is stuck peddling a geriatric CPU architecture that dates back to 2003. In our minds, then, PCs based on AMD technology are all about maximum performance in return for the minimum outlay.

That means paying as little as possible for a motherboard. By that rationale, Asrock's 880GMH USB3 should be our default winner.

MSI 870A-G54

What's your take on integrated GPUs? When it comes to gaming, integrated graphics is obviously in no-touchy territory. But it gets the job done just fine for 2D or home cinema work.

Likewise, onboard graphics is a handy backup should your 3D card lose the will to render. However, if you're building a gaming or content creation rig on a tight budget, paying for the redundant circuitry doesn't make sense.

What you want is a no-nonsense motherboard that ditches the feeble integrated GPU and only gives you what you need. What you want is MSI's 870A-G54. Right? That's an affirmative, on paper at least.

MSI 880GMA-E45

Are you ever likely to run two AMD video cards in multi-GPU CrossFire mode or use a second graphics card as a physics or GPGPU accelerator? The honest answer is: it's unlikely.

What you probably don't need, in other words, is a full sized ATX mobo with a silly number of PCI-e slots. A micro-ATX board with a single graphics slot and some enthusiast-friendly features will get the job done just fine.

Enter, MSI's 880GMA-E45. Powered by AMD's middling 880G chipset, it's bang up to date and offers enough power features to keep most enthusiasts happy.

Asus M4A88TD-V EVO

Asus is the name, impossibly slick motherboards is the game. Even this modest M4A88TD-V Evo model is still quite a looker. For starters, like nearly all Asus boards it's immaculately arranged.

Wherever possible, components are positioned in near-perfect little rows. It must make motherboard engineers from other companies weep onto their MOSFETs. Then there's the natty blue-and-black colour scheme and expensive heatsinks for the northbridge and voltage regulation circuitry.

It's nearly enough to make you assume this is a fine board without dissecting the details or seeing the benchmarks. Nearly enough, but not quite.

Sapphire Pure 890GX

The number of PC component manufacturers appears to be on the wane. The whys and wherefores are not entirely clear but probably have something to do with the recent financial crisis. That and the general process of consolidation, which most maturing industries experience.

Less choice is never a good thing, so we're fully in favour of having as many players on the scene, even if some are rather, well, occasional, such as Sapphire.

The outfit behind some of our favourite ATI Radeon-based graphics cards, Sapphire offers a modest collection of both Intel and AMD compatible boards.

For now, it offers a single AMD 8 Series model, the PURE CrossFireX 890GX.

Gigabyte GA790XTA-UD4

Stuffing ever-more features and functionality into chips. That's what computing is all about. In the past, ever-increasing transistor counts have enabled the likes of Intel and AMD to make their execution cores more sophisticated, perhaps bolting on extra cache memory or maybe bunging in a floating point unit or three.

More recently, chip engineers have spent their transistor budgets by cramming in more cores. But arguably the most significant current trend is the drive towards SoC or system-on-a-chip designs.

In the context of the PC, that means taking bits off the motherboard and sticking them into the CPU. Bits like the memory controller, I/O and integrated graphics.

The point is that you could argue that mobos are becoming less and less critical. The end game seems to be a dumb board with a few sockets that does little more than connect components and supply power.

ASRock 890FX Deluxe 3

A high end board for mid-range money, what's not to like? That's what Asrock hopes you'll think when you clock the 890FX chipset and a £125 sticker. But does this performance-orientated board deliver?

If you're in the habit of tag-teaming multiple graphics cards, Asrock has the bases covered with a trio of PCI Express graphics slots and has gone to town on the northbridge and MOSFET cooling, too.

It's an active arrangement with a fan on the MOSFET cooler connected to the Northbridge via a heat pipe. The only slight downside is that it does impinge a little on space around the socket. That said, it is removable.

Asus Crosshair IV Formula

There's still something particularly perverse about paying more for a motherboard than a CPU. For high-end Intel chips approaching £1,000, that's not a problem. But almost all of AMD's processors can be had for less than £150.

At £170 this Asus uberboard is therefore more expensive than a six core Phenom II X6 1055T. Put simply, the Crosshair IV Formula needs to be special. Fortunately, it is.

Predictably, the chipset is AMD's flagship 890FX discrete graphics offering. Headline specs start with a grand total of 42 PCI-e 2.0 lanes.

5 Good AMD AM3+ and FM2+ Gaming Motherboards

AMD is known for its incredible value. In this post, I've listed some of my favorite motherboards listed for the platform.

While the AMD AM3+ platform is now several years old, did you know that many of its motherboards are still in the top 10 for retailer sites? This proves that the passion from AMD's consumers is still very much alive. This comes because of one major selling point, value.

I recommend AMD's AM3+ and FM2+ platforms for a variety of builds on my website. While most of these builds are budget builds, there's a lot to like about the performance you get with them. The new AM4 Ryzen X370 platform is also a good option for gamers.

If it's been a while since you've built a PC and you're confused about the compatibility of newer motherboards in 2019, here's a brief list that should help you.

5 Good AM3+ Motherboards for the Money in 2019

Yes, we're still using AM3+ in 2019. Here's a look at a few good boards for pushing the platform.

Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z

Looking for an FM2+ motherboard? Scroll down to see my 5 favorite options.

If you're really trying to get the most out of your FX series processor, a good way to do that is with the Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z. This motherboard represents a high-quality design with plenty of overclocking features. For the performance you get, it also sells for a reasonable price and it holds most of the world records as well.

By no means am I suggesting that if you're going with a budget build you that you should go with this board. In that case, you'd be better off going with a budget board and putting more towards your CPU and GPU.

I also don't necessarily suggest this board for those going for a pretty standard over-clock as this can easily be handled by the Asus Sabertooth Model or Pro models.

That being said, if you do want the highest level of performance for your gaming rig, then this can provide it.

A Good AM3+ Motherboards Under $150

Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0

In terms of value and power usage, the Asus M5A99FX is probably my favorite. Find it on rebate and you can get it for under $120. For that $120, you get many of the same military-grade quality components of higher-end boards with similar over-clocking features that you need while not paying for those you don't want if you're not setting world records.

While this board did receive a Tom's Hardware Smart Buy award, I feel that it's perfect for the Avid power user. However, again, it's not necessarily appropriate for the budget user or those looking for a small over-clock. Those buyer's may be more interested in what I recommended in my $500 budget PC gaming build.

Good AM3+ Motherboard Under $100

MSI 970 Gaming

I've been impressed with MSI's attention to quality while maintaining low pricing as of late. The MSI 970 Gaming has to be my favorite AM3+ motherboard in the under $100 category.

With it I was able to take my FX 8350 to 5GHz while keeping CPU temps around 56 degrees celsius under full load.

For design, the black and red scheme of the board is amazing and compliments the high-end hardware of my rig nicely. Shielded audio along with quality components and full SLI and Crossfire support really give you a lot for what you spend.

In addition, this motherboard has simply been reliable for me and is a perfect option at right around $100.

A Good Budget AMD Am3+ Motherboard Under $50

If you find this Gigabyte board on rebate, you can get it for under $40 this month. While this board isn't meant for overclocking, most likely if you're in this price range you're just trying to put together a standard rig and dedicating as much money to your GPU/CPU as possible.

A Good CPU/GPU Combo Under $300 for this Board

Want the most out of your rig? Try putting this board with an FX 6300 CPU and an R9 270X for a great CPU/GPU combo under $300 that will allow you to run modern games in 1080p.

Benchmark Example: A game like Battlefield 4 with this CPU/GPU combo should net you an average of 68FPS on High Detail Settings in 1080p.

5 Good FM2+ Motherboards for the Money

When you're looking at FM2+ motherboards, you're generally talking about a budget build and, therefore, want to avoid overspending on the motherboard. Anything over $100, you'd actually have to question whether you'd be better off going with a similar AM3+ option.

There are exceptions to this, like a home theater or Mini ITX builds that simply have no AM3+ options available.

Other than that, your FM2+ build is really there just to give you the most amount of performance possible for the money you spend. This is best accomplished by going with one of the less expensive options below along with an Athlon GPU combination or stand-alone APU. Going into this with a multi-GPU setup in mind you'd have to question, again, whether or not you'd be better with an AM3+ setup.

FM2+ Motherboards Under $50

This is the price point I feel that is really appealing for micro ATX builds. While a mini ITX board could charge more for additional features, gamers wanting to build these PCs expect an inexpensive price tag along with quality parts.

The two motherboards below are my picks this month due to their price this month along with functionality.

GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-D3H FM2+ Motherboard Layout

This is the perfect board for those looking for plenty of features with all of the bells and whistles you don't need.

The quality is substantially better than the boards above with Ultra Durable 4 Plus, and it has extras like compatibility for DDR3 2133 memory, HDMI, Dual-Link DVI, and D-Sub ports for Triple-Monitor Support.

Those who want to overclock can do so; however, you may want to consider some heatsinks for the MOSFETs.

A Good AMD Mini ITX FM2+ Motherboard for HTPCs

For me, this is where the socket FM2+ processors and APU hold the most appeal. Small form factor Mini ITX builds along with inexpensive APUs that combine both my graphics card and processor just make sense.

This Gigabyte AMD FM2+, model GA-F2A68HM-H, comes with everything you need to get set up quickly and has features that most want like built-in Wi-Fi. I recently purchased this for a $150 build and it's been everything I actually needed. It's not the sturdiest of boards or most feature-rich but it maintains an ideal price point for this type of motherboard. If you're able to get it on rebate you should be able to get it in the $40 price range.

Additional technical specifications include; 1 PCIe x 16, 4 x Sata 6GB/s, up to 4 USB 3.0/2.0 Ports, and support for up to 64GB of DDR3 2133 system memory.

A Good Gaming FM2+ Motherboard for Overclockers

In my opinion, you have to really know a motherboard like this really well in order to know why you'd purchase it. If you're looking for raw FPS, then you might get an AM3+/CPU combo option that works better. If you want to make the most out of your small form factor FM2+ build, then this will help.

That being said, in my opinion, the main reason for purchasing this motherboard falls more in line with its gaming features. This includes the Killer E2200 Networking, Onboard Audio with the Realtek ALC1150 Chipset, and all of the expansion and rear panel ports you want for your HTPC or small form factor gaming rig.

Overall it's not for everyone, but for those looking to make the most of their FM2+ setup it's a decent option.

AM3+ Motherboards

Compatibility for these motherboards goes back several years and includes the FX, Phenom II, Athlon II, and Sempron 100 series processors. These all support up to a PCIe 2.0 standard (non-synthesized).

FM2+ Motherboards

When AMD initially released its Llano K10 architecture back in 2011, I figured that socket FM1 might last more than just one generation, but it didn't. While the socket FM2 lasted through Trinity and Richland, using one of AMD's newer steamroller core Kaveri APU and Athlon CPU will require a socket FM2+ motherboard. FM2+ motherboards are backward compatible with FM2 based APU and CPU.

What Else is New with FM2+?

FM2+ motherboards offer native support for 4k resolution displays on an HDMI port, PCIe 3.0, as well as DX11.1.

AMD in 2018

Everyone is waiting for Zen. AMD's Zen FX CPUs were expected to be released in late 2016 but we're still waiting here in early 2018. It's rumored that Zen based-APUs will bring pS4 and Xbox One-type performance.

AMD has been quoted in saying that the Zen architecture will deliver an unprecedented 40% improvement in instructions per clock cycle over the previous generation. All of this, without increasing power.

On the other side of things, we've got Intel with its 1151 Kaby Lake motherboard platform. From what we've seen, it's a very marginal improvement vs Haswell. The Z270 boards do have some improvements, but are power hungry as well.

I'm not really sure that the r9 270x can hold up over 60 fps at full HD and high settings in Battlefield 4. Especially with this cpu, it's going to be a huge bottleneck.

AMD Socket AM3 Budget Motherboard Shootout

In recent weeks we have looked atdozens of AMD and Intel desktop CPUs to determine which offer the best price vs. performance ratio.

Quite clearly, in the $100 to $200 range, the Intel Core i5 750 emerged as the winner at the upper end of the spectrum. Those looking to spend a bit less, at around $150 the best two options currently available are the Phenom II X4 925 and the Core i3 540. However, as we tightened up our budget it was all AMD.

When looking at sub-$100 parts the result didn't come as much of a shock given our previous findings. For about $100, the Athlon II X4 630 and Phenom II X2 555 belong at the top of the food chain, delivering unrivaled performance in their class. The potential to unlock two additional cores on the latter was just the icing on the cake, giving us Phenom II X4 955 performance with the click of a button.

Indeed, the AMD AM3 platform appears to be the way to go for budget-minded users, and best of all there's a huge range of affordable motherboards to choose from.

Because of the way AMD has been forced into playing their cards, it is easy to find and purchase an AM3 motherboard capable of supporting even the latest Phenom II X6 processor for less than $100. Many of these motherboards also boast newly released technologies such as SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0, making them even more attractive.

Today we are putting together a few of these affordable AM3 motherboards to see just how much bang for your buck they offer. And we mean it, the three motherboards we hand-picked for testing come from reputable manufacturers and are being sold for less than $100. As part of our evaluation, we will attempt to unlock the Phenom II X2 555 processor ($100) on each board, essentially obtaining the performance of a $160 part without shelling out the extra cash for it.

The contenders include the Asrock 880GMH/USB3 ($85), Gigabyte 870A-UD3 ($95) and MSI 870A-G54 ($90). All three motherboards feature a current generation AMD 8-series chipset, but that doesn't mean they are all alike as we are about to find out.


Socket AM3

CPU socket for AMD CPUs

Socket AM3 is a CPU socket for AMDprocessors. AM3 was launched on February 9, 2009 as the successor to Socket AM2+, alongside the initial grouping of Phenom II processors designed for it.[1] The sole principal change from AM2+ to AM3 is support for DDR3 SDRAM. The fastest CPU for socket AM3 is the Phenom II X6 1100T.

Like the previous AMD socket, the "AM3 Processor Functional Data Sheet" (AMD document number 40778) has not been made publicly available. The "Family 10h AMD Phenom™ Processor Product Data Sheet" (document 446878) has,[2] but contains only a brief list of features of the Phenom, and does not contain any substantive technical data regarding socket AM3.


Socket AM3 breaks compatibility with AM2/AM2+ processors due to a subtle change in key placement. The AM3 socket has 941 pin contacts in a different layout[3] while AM2+ processors have 940 pins. Tom's Hardware removed the two obstructing key pins from an AM2+ Phenom processor in order to fit it into an AM3 socket. The processor did not work in the AM3 socket, but still worked in an AM2+ socket, suggesting that compatibility issues run deeper than merely the key pins.[4] It is likely because the built-in memory controller in AM2/AM2+ processors only supports DDR2 (unlike AM3 processors, which support both DDR2 & DDR3 memory).[5] In fact, a few motherboards were manufactured that supported both DDR2 and DDR3, however only one type could be used at a time. Despite using an AM3 socket and despite using a northbridge and southbridge found on AM3 motherboards, they support any AM2, AM2+, or AM3 processor.[6]

As AM3 processors also support DDR2, they are backwards-compatible with Socket AM2/AM2+, contingent upon a BIOS update for the motherboard. Manufacturers including Asus,[7]Gigabyte,[8] and others have labeled existing AM2/AM2+ boards as being "AM3 Ready" or similar, indicating that BIOS support is provided for the specified boards. This allows existing AM2/AM2+ systems to upgrade the CPU without having to upgrade any other components.


The 4 holes for fastening the heatsink to the motherboard are placed in a rectangle with lateral lengths of 48 mm and 96 mm for AMD's sockets Socket AM2, Socket AM2+, Socket AM3, Socket AM3+ and Socket FM2. Cooling solutions should therefore be interchangeable.

Socket AM3+[edit]

AM3+ is a modification of the AM3 socket. It has one additional pin for new Bulldozer-based AM3+ processors and is backwards-compatible with AM3 processors. It broke backwards-compatibility between AM3+ processors and AM2 and AM2+ motherboards because the processors do not support DDR2 memory.
