With eight high slots, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the Catalyst is designed with huge DPS in mind.  It’s also slightly knobbled by having only two mid slots, meaning the trinity of AB / scram / web won’t fit.  And it’s hardly generously endowed in the lows either – three slots won’t fit much tank.

Like all destroyers, it’s not particularly quick either, so although a MWD / Warp Disruptor kite is possible to fit up, it’s so slow that it’s only really practical if you know for sure your opponents are going to be shortish range destroyers or cruisers.  For argument’s sake, I’ve conjured up a kite fit so you can see how it might, or might not, work.

So in reality there are only a few viable flavours of Catalyst, on a sliding scale of gank to tank depending on taste, budget and whether you’re flying in a fleet or solo.  They all work broadly the same – get in range, get the scram on, get as close as possible and start melting with the blasters.

This is the Mike Tyson of Gallente Destroyers – the eight neutrons delivering huge blows to compensate for the comparatively weak tank.  Don’t worry about the tank.  If you can catch your opponent and get the Neutrons into range, this will blow away just about anything that fits into a small plex inside 20 seconds.

The Small Algid is worth the cash to take the CPU pressure off from the Neutron IIs, thereby enabling you to fit the Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I.  Given a choice between the Burst and the Collision, I tend to choose the Collision as it gives you a higher alpha and lasts a bit longer with guns overheated.

Given that it’s Afterburner fitted, this is designed to lurk right on the button in plexes and deliver a series of ultra-hard hitting, confidence shattering volleys – 1,000+ damage at a time.

With all the guns heated, you get an astonishing 597 DPS out of this slugger.  But I wouldn’t recommend an all-guns-heated approach as you won’t last long before they run out.  Instead, I would suggest you heat four guns:  the two outermost guns in each rack.  This gives you a more reasonable lifetime of 52s across the rack as a whole with 558 DPS in total – more than enough to get the job done.

This is a pretty balanced fit, delivering a functional tank of 6k EHP but still packing panic-inducing DPS of 472.  With the MWD it can be used both solo and in fleets.  Again – if you want to overheat the guns for better DPS, choose the two outermost guns on each side.  This gives you 44 seconds before guns start burning out, but ups the DPS to 507.

This is a 3m ISK destroyer, bringing 250+ DPS to the table, with a moderate tank, a MWD, and a 10km range.  The rules are broken a bit by fitting MagStabs rather than tracking mods in the lows, but who cares? It’s not uber, but for what it delivers it is extremely cost effective when you need to throw ships at the enemy during fleet engagements.

Weapons

The Catalyst uses 8 turrets. Railguns are the “long-ranged” hybrid system, with some of the longest firing ranges in the game, compared to the extremely short-ranged Blasters. In exchange, they deal less damage over time, are harder to fit, and have very poor tracking against close-in targets.

The railguns are loaded with ammunition. Antimatter is the shortest-ranged basic hybrid charge, but does the most damage. The base range of your railguns will allow you to easily outrange your enemies even with this short-ranged ammo, so more damage is always nice. You should keep about 2500 spare rounds in your cargohold.

Additionally, this fit uses a in a low slot. This passively increases the damage output and rate of fire of its railguns.

Defenses

This ship uses a in one of it low slots to repair incoming damage.

It also fits a to increase its resistance to damage.

Utility

The provides your ship with additional speed. This both makes it easier to catch enemy ships and also makes your ship harder to hit.

The helps your projectiles apply their damage better, because it’s easier to hit the slower targets. (It also makes it easier to stay at the proper range from the slower enemies.)

Rigs

Rigs are passive modifications to a ship, trading off one attribute against another. Unlike modules, rigs cannot be removed without being destroyed. As a starter fit, this fit makes limited use of rigging, since many “optimal” rigs are often relatively expensive and may be difficult to find near your starter station.

A rig will give your hybrid turrets additional damage output, though it also increases the Powergrid usage of your guns.

How To Fly

This is designed as a mid-range fit. Try to hang back from your targets at a range of about 7500m, locking and destroying them in quick succession. If targets are getting closer than that, use your Afterburner to pull back to a longer range.

As always, if the incoming damage is proving too much for your ship and you’re beginning to take structure damage, warp out.

Future Improvements

The above fit should be usable with starting skills unless otherwise noted, and it uses relatively cheap and widely-available modules.

As you accumulate skill points and ISK, you will be able to fit more potent modules to your ship, increasing its effectiveness. These modules may not be readily available outside of trade hubs, but it can be worth the trip.

We recommend working towards the following improved fit:

The improved fit will require the training of the following skills to use all installed equipment:

  • Level IV
  • Level IV

The improved fit uses a rather than an Afterburner. An MWD takes a large amount of capacitor to run, and causes a large increase to your ship’s signature radius, meaning that unlike the Afterburner, it is not useful for evading enemy fire. However, it provides a massively increased speed bonus.

You should activate the MWD only when moving to a new position or enemy, and disable it once you have arrived.

The improved fit replaces the weapon rig with a , to patch the weak point in its armor’s resist profile.

It also adds two rigs, passively increasing its capacitor regeneration and allowing the armor repairer to be run for longer periods.

Nearly every module has been improved to a “meta” version, requiring less fitting space and granting improved effectiveness, but costing more ISK and/or being less widely available, or a t2 version, which costs more ISK, requires more skillpoints, and is harder to fit:

Summary

The Catalyst is a Gallente destroyer. Its bonuses favor blasters, though it can also be rail fit. It has 2 mids, allowing it to fit a tackle module, and 3 low slots for an armor tank. Unfortunately the Catalyst is still a destroyer, so it has a large signature for its tank, making it vulnerable to cruiser weapons, and it's slow speed and lack of mid slots means it will have difficulty dictating range against frigates, which is important for a blaster ship. A railgun fit Catalyst is a very fast L1 mission runner, but has trouble tanking level 2s.

The Catalyst's very high damage at short range makes it the ship of choice for Suicide Ganking in High Sec space.

Like all destroyers, the Catalyst is also a great entry-level salvager ship on a player's path to a Noctis (in unsafe areas like wormhole systems pilots often fly destroyers even if they have the skills for the Noctis).

Tactics

Catalysts are the epitome of the Destroyer as a disposable DPS platform; even without a hull bonus, 8 blasters provide firepower better than some cruisers. Unfortunately, blasters have very short ranges and the Catalyst struggles to get in and stay in range due to its low speed, thin tank, and limited space for tackle and propulsion modules. This means that Catalysts have limited PvP applications outside of suicide ganking. It is possible to mitigate the ship's disadvantages by flying with fleetmates who can apply tackle and provide warp-ins on targets, increasing the likelihood of the ship living long enough to apply its impressive paper DPS.
