Cleveland january weather

Cleveland january weather DEFAULT

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - January 2021 will be remembered for its lack of snow and its warmer-than-normal temperatures.

They only accumulated 6.5 inches of snow at Cleveland Hopkins in January.

What would be considered “normal” snowfall for January in Cleveland?

They average 18.7 inches of snow at Cleveland Hopkins in January.

This gives Cleveland a snowfall deficit for January of 12.2 inches.

That being said, many of us on the East Side had at least a coating of snow on the ground for most of the month.

That just speaks to the presence of various microclimates around our area.

Meanwhile, in Akron, they also saw less snow than the statistical average.

Perhaps surprisingly, Akron actually recorded more snow than Cleveland.

They accumulated 9.9 inches of snow in Akron in January.

They average 12.4 inches of snow in Akron in January.

January 2021 was also fairly dry in terms of overall precipitation accumulated.

At Hopkins, they recorded 1.66 inches of precipitation in January, and in Akron, they recorded 1.97 inches of precipitation.

The historical averages are 2.72 inches in Cleveland and 2.61 inches in Akron.

With less snow than average on the books for January 2021, one might wonder, “Was it warmer than average?”

The answer is yes.

Our average temperature in January in Cleveland was 30.8 degrees.

That’s about 2.7 degrees above average, but it’s not enough to put us in the top 10 warmest Januarys on record.

24 days out of 31 featured above average temperatures in Cleveland, and that is pretty impressive.

Out of those 24 above average days, 12 of those were more than five degrees above average.

The average temperature this January in Akron was 30.8 degrees.

That’s 4.7 degrees above average.

Just like the numbers in Cleveland, that isn’t enough to put us in the top 10 warmest Januarys on record.

In Akron, out of 31 days, 25 of them featured above average temperatures.

We may have missed out on a lot of snow in January, and we certainly lacked those intense cold Arctic intrusions of Januarys past, but one thing we were not lacking in January 2021 was cloud cover.

In Cleveland, they had no clear days, and in Akron, they only had one clear day all month long.

They had 22 cloudy days in Cleveland and in Akron.

The remainder of days were considered partly cloudy.

This isn’t surprising, as January is statistically one of our cloudiest months of the year.

Now, as we enter February, the final month of Meteorological Winter, we’re once again experiencing widespread snow.

This first full week of February, and the second week, too, will feature Arctic cold, snow, and strong winds off of the lake.
