Not all Chevrolet Cruzes are created equal—at least, not this year. China is getting an all-new Cruze, one that shares some similarities to the upcoming next-generation global model, which eventually will make its way here to the U.S. So don’t confuse that car with the Cruze you see here: a mildly refreshed version of the current sedan that will serve as a placeholder until the redesigned global car debuts sometime in the next two years.
Before you lament China’s getting a new Cruze before we do, know that it’s a unique, for-China-only model that is built in that country, for that country. Our Cruze might not be as fresh, but the 2015 model debuting at the 2014 New York auto show builds on the handsome and competent sedan that replaced the woefully boring—and, as it turns out, ignition-issue-stricken—Cobalt back in 2010.
Cruzing Toward the Rest of the Family
Chevrolet has imbued the four-door with a new upper and lower grille evocative of the solidly good-looking Impala’s maw. We’re not sure the swept-back grille works as well here, given how seemingly high it has been placed on the Cruze’s front end, but it certainly pulls the Cruze into line with Chevrolet’s other sedans. We dig the new lower fascia treatment, which comes with LED running lights on LT and LTZ trim levels, though. Chevy didn’t change anything, it seems, about the Cruze’s butt.
MICHAEL SIMARI, MARC URBANO, THE MANUFACTURER
A host of minor changes highlight the 2015 Cruze’s interior, which benefits from revised cup holders, the trunk-release button has been relocated to the center console, and the door lock buttons have migrated from the console to the doors. The Cruze also is the latest Chevrolet product to inherit an available built-in 4G LTE data connection, which also turns the car into a Wi-Fi hot spot. The 4G connection enables access to Chevy’s AppShop native app marketplace—when it comes fully online. Apple Siri Eyes Free integration also is on the docket of tech improvements, and it allows iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users to ask the Siri personal assistant whatever they want while on the move. Finally, Chevy added text message alerts to the options list, which can read incoming texts aloud to the driver.
If you liked the Cruze’s powertrains before, good news, because they’ve transitioned from 2014 to 2015 unchanged. Base models still get a 138-hp, 1.8-liter four, while a more efficient 138-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter four (making 148 lb-ft of torque vs. the 1.8-liter’s 125 lb-ft) remains optional. The Cruze diesel lives on for 2015, and its 151-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder again earns a top-notch EPA fuel-economy rating of 46 mpg. The gasoline-powered Cruze Eco, which uses the 1.4-liter turbo, again hits 42 mpg on the highway. All four Cruze trim levels (LS, LT, RS, and LTZ) carry over to 2015, and we don’t expect any major price increases over last year’s equivalent models.
Chevrolet doesn’t list any mechanical updates outside of the engine bay, but we find today’s Cruze to be a decent-driving and quiet conveyance, so aside from an injection of sportiness, it isn’t wanting for much. We’d of course still pick the Mazda 3, Ford Focus, or Euro-tastic Volkswagen Jetta were we shopping for a compact sedan, but the Cruze should remain a solid, if unexciting, choice.

Chevrolet Cruze Expert Review
New for 2015
The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze receives minor styling revisions and LED daytime running lights on all models except the LS trim. Chevrolet has also added text message alerts, Apple Siri integration, and available Wi-Fi hotspot with 4G LTE connection through OnStar.
The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is a compact sedan slotting beneath the midsize Malibu and above the subcompact Sonic. It is sold in four grades and with three engine choices, including a fuel-efficient diesel.
The 2015 Cruze is available with a choice of three engines paired to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. A 1.8-liter I-4 with 138 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque serves as the base engine and achieves 25/36 mpg city/highway with the manual and 22/35 mpg with the automatic.
A turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4 making 138 hp and 148 lb-ft will be the engine that most Cruzes will come with and is rated at 26/38 mpg in the LT and LTZ trims. Cruze Eco models, which are optimized for fuel economy, get 26/42 mpg with the manual and 26/39 mpg with the automatic.
For those looking for the most frugal model, the Cruze Diesel with its 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel I-4 producing 151 hp and 264 lb-ft (280 lb-ft with overboost) has the best gas mileage at 27/46 mpg.
Driving dynamics is average for the class with decent acceleration and handling that allows the car to feel lighter than it is. Refinement is where the 2015 Cruze excels with a comfort-minded chassis, "low road noise and relatively supple ride," making it a good choice for long drives. The car's slow-shifting transmission and lack of power, however, detracts from its overall performance, putting it behind competitors such as the Mazda3 and Ford Focus.
Interior space in the 2015 Cruze is average because of the cramped rear seats while cargo space is good with gas-powered variants at 15 cubic feet. Diesel models have a smaller 13.3 cubic feet in the back due to the 4.5-gallon tank of urea used to clean the car's exhaust fumes. A large drivetrain hump in the rear renders the center position unusable for adults, making the Cruze a four-seat car. Center stack controls are logical and easy to use but the plastics used are hard and low-quality particularly in the dash and door panels.
The Chevrolet Cruze has a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars).
UPDATE: In IIHS evaluations, the 2015 Cruze received a Good score in four categories and Marginal in the small overlap front crash test (Good is the highest possible score).
What We Think
The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is an average entry in the compact car segment due to its weak powertrain and cramped interior. In a 2013/2014 Comparison of Hybrid and Diesel sedans, we said that the car's interior was tightest on legroom in the rear due to "a space-robbing center floor hump." Its driving dynamics, while average for the class, didn't impress due to its heavy weight and underpowered gas-powered engines. The diesel-powered Cruze impresses with its range and good fuel economy, making it ideal for long drives while the car's overall refinement make it a good choice for commuting.

MyLink and OnStar with 4G LTE details
Malibu’s next-generation MyLink gives customers the best of both worlds when it comes to infotainment. It provides easy, intuitive operation of basic functions, yet it is also highly customizable and capable of linking up to 10 devices such as smartphones, SD cards and MP3 players, giving users more ways of staying connected. It is standard on LT and LTZ models.
Enhanced connectivity and convenience include a new Text Messaging Alerts feature for smartphone users with Bluetooth profile (M.A.P.), which reads incoming texts through the vehicle’s speakers, and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users to enhance connectivity and convenience. Each enables voice-controlled connectivity, to help keep phones safely stored and hands on the wheel.
Additional standard and available features include:
- Eight-inch-diagonal color touch screen and multiple USB ports
- Enhancements including gesture recognition and natural language voice recognition
- Available navigation.
Complementing MyLink to enhance Malibu’s connectivity is new OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. It provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and comes with a three-month/three gigabyte data trial.
4G LTE is the most current and fastest mobile data network – 10 times faster than 3G and 100 times faster than the previous generation of OnStar hardware. And with OnStar, it also offers stronger, broader coverage than smartphones on the same network and it’s easy to use: If the vehicle is on, the connection is on.
At the time of purchase, six months OnStar Directions and Connections includes all of OnStar’s advisor-based safety and security features, including Automatic Crash Response and Stolen Vehicle Assistance, as well as turn-by-turn navigation.
Five years of OnStar Basic Plan includes RemoteLink Key Fob Services, allowing owners to remotely start and lock/unlock a car (if properly equipped), and activate the horn and lights from anywhere with a data connection. It also includes OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics, which runs monthly checks of a vehicle’s engine, transmission, anti-lock brakes and more, and Dealer Maintenance Notification, which sends a diagnostic report directly to a preferred dealer to simplify service scheduling.
Stop/start technology enhances efficiency
Malibu has two powerful and efficient powertrain offerings: the standard 2.5L iVLC (intake valve lift control) with stop/start technology and a 2.0L turbo. The stop/start feature on the 2.5L shuts down the engine in certain driving conditions to reduce fuel consumption. Along with other technologies, including direct injection, variable valve lift control and a six-speed automatic transmission, the 2.5L powertrain contributes to EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 25 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway.
There are no buttons to push or procedures to learn with Malibu’s stop/start system. It automatically shuts down the engine when the car comes to a stop under certain driving conditions, such as a stoplight. The engine automatically restarts when the driver takes his or her foot off the brake. The system monitors vehicle speed, climate control system operation and other factors to determine whether it is efficient to shut off the engine.
Unique components used with stop/start include:
- A tandem-solenoid starter that enables the engine to restart more quickly and more smoothly – even if the engine hasn’t come to a complete stop
- An electrically driven transmission auxiliary hydraulic pressure pump that keeps the fluid in the six-speed automatic circulating and primed for immediate take-off when the driver removes his or her foot from the brake pedal
- Larger, 12-volt absorbent glass mat (AGM) primary battery – which delivers up to four times the typical life cycle of a conventional battery – and a small, auxiliary 12-volt AGM battery
- Dual-battery isolation module that ensures both batteries are properly charged and the primary battery always has a sufficient charge to start the vehicle
- Torque-reaction engine mounts that dampen the vibrations associated with a restart, helping deliver smooth, nearly imperceptible performance.
The 2.5L is SAE-certified at 196 horsepower (146 kW) and 186 lb-ft of torque (252 Nm). Revised transmission shift points and quicker shifts also enhance the feeling of performance – while delivering greater refinement.
The Malibu’s available 2.0L turbo engine delivers nearly 14 percent more torque than its predecessor– SAE-certified 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). Revised engine calibration accounts for the improvement, making the Malibu 2.0L turbo’s torque the best in the segment, even among six-cylinder competitors. The result is a stronger feeling of acceleration from a stop and a greater feeling of power on demand in almost all driving conditions. The 2.0L turbo also produces an SAE-certified 259 horsepower (193 kW).
Chassis and suspension
Inspired by the Impala, the Malibu’s chassis and suspension also contribute to a dynamic driving experience, with features such as springs that are internal to the struts (2.5L-equipped models). They enable more refined calibration of the dampers for a smoother overall ride, while also improving body roll control and weight transfer during acceleration or turning. That helps keep the wheels planted, contributing to a more precise, controlled feel – especially while cornering.
Fuel-saving electric power rack-and-pinion variable-effort power steering is standard and enables effortless low-speed maneuvers and a higher degree of steering feel at higher speeds, with high-effort calibrations that improve the overall steering feel.
Additional chassis control technologies include four-channel anti-lock brakes, full-function traction control, four-corner electronic stability control, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist system, corner brake control, hydraulic brake fade assist and drag torque control.
Designed for safety
Malibu offers a wide range of standard and available safety features in the segment. Available side blind zone alert and rear cross traffic alert complement the available forward collision alert and lane departure warning to enhance Malibu’s crash-avoidance capability. These advanced, active technologies use radar to help avoid crashes, with visual and audible alerts designed to identify potential threats with sufficient warning to give the driver time to react and make changes. They’re part of the segment’s only suite of advanced safety technologies offered on a midlevel trim.
Additional contributors to Malibu’s safety and peace of mind include 10 standard air bags – and two optional air bags – and available rear vision camera. The standard and available air bags include:
- Dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags (two)
- Pelvic/thorax side-impact air bags for all outboard occupants, front and rear (four)
- Driver and passenger knee air bags (two)
- Roof rail air bags with rollover protection (two)
- Available second-row head/thorax side-impact air bags (two).
Malibu also employs systems that enable greater vehicle control, including standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, all-speed traction control and four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel ABS.
OnStar is standard. It uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of crash. OnStar service also includes MyLink mobile apps, whichoffer vehicle information and OnStar services via the customer’s smartphone.
