Windows 7 Start Up Repair disc for a HP Compaq Presario CQ56-11US

You might be able to call HP and order some, but that's old enough that I doubt that they will have them. If you have the Windows 7 serial key on the bottom of the laptop, you can install Windows 7 from a generic Windows 7 Microsoft CD. For example, just search eBay for "Windows 7 Home CD" and you should find some there for pretty cheap, Then, during the install you will put in the license key from the bottom of your laptop. Make sure you get the right CD (Home vs Pro etc.). If you have more than 4GB of RAM you will want the 64 bit version of Windows 7.

You will then need to go to the HP website and download all the drivers for the laptop. If you are not technical this will be a challenge. Have a geek friend help with this part.

Ideally you would find the actual restore discs, as they would have the drivers, but that is somewhat unlikely.

Computers shipped after the spring of 2003 were equipped with a recovery partition that can be used to restore your computer.

However, a set of recovery discs can also be created using the software provided by Compaq (or HP) if you don’t have these discs already.

Create recovery disk for Windows XP

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

If you haven’t created the discs already, it’s strongly recommended that you do so.

The Recovery CD-DVD Creator software can be used to create the discs for your computer.

This software can be used to create only 1 set of recovery discs. If you already created the set, you won’t be able to create a new disc.

If you don’t have the Recovery CD-DVD Creator software installed and neither the recovery partition intact, you can use your original Windows XP installation disk or go to Download recovery disk for Compaq.

Several notes about the software before you continue:

  • If you already created a set of discs already, Recovery CD-DVD Creator will not allow you to create a new set of discs
  • You need to use blank and writeable CDs or DVDs. It’s recommended that you use blank CD-Rs or DVD+Rs, and not DVD-Rs.
  • You may need up to 10 CDs or 2 DVDs
  • The recovery partition of your Compaq PC must be intact in order for the recovery software to work
  • It may take up to 10 or 15 minutes per CD

Tutorial How to Install Windows 7 on Hp Compaq CQ40 Laptop

Please Help! Windows 7, Compaq Presario CQ57. Needed ASAP

There are no quick fixes when it comes to freezing, locking up, slow-running, computers.  If possible, download, install, run MiniToolBox and Piriform's Speccy.  Keep all logs.  Don't post bits and pieces of those logs until asked to do so.

After the factory reset, did you re-install all the earlier 3rd party programs and utilities?  And, did you reconfigure Windows and such to run as it did before (before the problems I meant)?

In short, what security and monitoring programs are running in the background and in the foreground?  Do those programs do lots of scanning and logging throughout the day and night?  Concerning 3rd party programs in general, are there a few must-haves from "the old days"?  A few must-haves meant to run on Windows 10, however, "bent" to run on Windows 7?

I ask questions because I have no idea where to start, and simply decided to start with a few questions.

Answer

You installed the wrong edition, you should have installed Windows 10 Home, not Pro.

    • The copy of Windows 10 you download and upgrade from will correspond with the edition of Windows you have installed, if it does not, this is why you might be experiencing problems activating:
  • Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core will install Windows 10 Home
  • Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro will install Windows 10 Pro

To find out if you have the right edition installed:

Click Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation > Edition.

If the edition of Windows 10 installed does not correspond with the edition of Windows 7 or Windows 8 you were previously running, then you need to reinstall the right edition.
