Ark: Survival Evolved expands again tomorrow, this time for free

Ark: Survival Evolved is nearly as popular now as it was at launch, so it's no great surprise that Studio Wildcard's Dino Riders-ish survival sandbox is still being supported. What is a pleasant surprise is that the new Valguero expansion will be completely free of charge, and released tomorrow. It won't require any existing DLC, and will include one new dinosaur to hunt or befriend; the agile and feathery Deinonychus, seen tussling with a Tyrannosaurus above. Below, a trailer taking us on a scenic tour of the multi-layered, 63 square kilometre new environment.

I can't deny that the new map is a fetching looking landscape, and nicely varied too. Wildcard boast eight varied biomes across multiple climates, although I'm not sure if that number includes the underground regions as well. On top of icy valleys and an active volcano, there'll be plenty of tunnels to dig around below. There's a mixture of natural caves, environments seen only in the Aberration expansion, and old ruins to discover underground or even underwater. It should be a fun showcase of what the developers have learned about environment design over the years.

The new map seems as good a reason as any for players to start fresh, and shake up the server social orders once more. Apparently it even includes an endgame challenge to work towards; a boss arena where players can challenge a Megapithecus, Manticore and Dragon simultaneously. Seems like it would be a fun challenge for a relatively low-tech swarm of players. Less so if they're all stomping around in power armour and with energy rifles. Perhaps one to try with the official Primitive Plus mod.

The Valguero expansion launches on June 18th, free for all Ark: Survival Evolved owners. Developers Studio Wildcard will be streaming a first peek at the new map later tonight at 3pm PST (11pm GMT) here on Twitch.

'ARK' Valguero Guide - Cave Locations, Base Spots, Dino List & More

ARK: Survival Evolved has migrated the Valguero mod map to official servers. With that in mind, here's a quick guide to help get you acquainted with the new area. Below, we'll reveal some great cave locations for base building and provide a full list of Dinos you might encounter.

ARK Valguero Cave Locations

If you're looking for the best spots for base building, here are a few hidden cave locations worth checking out.

Westtern Cave (33, 10): As seen below, you'll come to this waterfall. Enter through the middle of the fall or the smaller falls at the base of the structure. Once you get inside there's lots of space, but you'll need to be careful about ensuring those pathways are thoroughly guarded. Not only is the open area great for breeding, but there's also an underwater cave inside this cave, making it perfect for aquatic tames.

Red Obelisk Cave (82, 25): This is a smaller cave that may be better suited for solo players or those looking for a quick place to set up shop.

Western Cave 2 (60, 10): This is another small starter cave that could be easily defended if need be. The surrounding area is full of great resources too.

Spider Cave (73, 40): If you want a much bigger cave that's also close to lots of resources go here. There are winding paths that go on forever in multiple directions. It should be noted that this is one of the big Artifact Caves you'll need to head towards if you want to conquer Valguero's boss. Be aware that you'll need scuba gear too because there's tons of water here.

Temple Cave (44, 84): This is the second Artifact Cave you'll need to make your way through if beating the boss is your goal.

Aberration Zone Cave (38, 57): If you're hunting for Aberration creatures, this is where you'll find them.

Wyvern Trenches (07, 77): To find a Wyvern, head northeast. This one probably isn't for base building or living, but it's full of eggs and nests for survivors to scavenge.

Ice Cave (15, 27): This is a narrow ice cave with an artifact inside.

Solid Hiding Spot (53, 87): This is a small, narrow cave network that will keep you concealed from enemies or Dinos.

Under Castle Cave (37, 90): There's a massive breeding cave in this area with plenty of water.

New Resources
New Features
New Creatures

Valguero features a new Creature, the Deinonychus. The Deinonychus lays its nests throughout the map and stealing one of these Eggs is the only way to tame a Deinonychus aside from breeding one. They are very strong and hard to kill in packs.

There are also two variations of the Rock Elemental, the Chalk Golem (in The White Cliffs) and the Ice Golem (in the Snow Desert). These two variants are identical to the Rock Elemental in every way except for their appearance.

  • Only managed to find 2 dinos:

I remember on ragnarok I had a huge ini that allowed extinction and aberation dino's to spawn (with a slight bug on one island that had a tad too many crabs lol) but cant seem to find one for the new map

  • The code is all the same. Just need to change the dino and the region. You can find the region's codes online and the dino codes as well. Everything is will be exactly the same.

I was hoping someone may have a ready made one to save me having to reinvent the wheel... a tad lazy I know :)

  • look through the forums posts they're everywhere under ark. You should be able to find them pretty quickly. Also I would suggest always keeping a backup of your ini file in notepad

I did lookon the forum but "valgeuro" only shows 6 results so I assumed no one had asked the question before. Configuring this on a tablet at work at mo so I have about 12 tabs open (and dealing with a wierd game.ini issue where I see some variables with out definitions at the end of the file O.o but will look through the forum page by page later.

  • So far I have this info:

SPAWNENTRY is the name of the spawn node you want to edit. They can be found here:

ENTRYNAME is just an identifier for server admins to distinguish between multiple spawn configs. It can be anything you like.

ENTITYID is the identification code to define which creature you want to add. Those can be found on this page:

The EntryWeight field is how likely the creature is to be picked to spawn, versus all the other creatures which can spawn in an area. By default all weights are 1.0, but increasing it to 2.0 would make that creature twice as likely to be picked over other creatures. While reducing it to 0.5 would make that creature half as likely to be picked, meaning they will be more rare.

And finally the MaxPercentage line is a limit on how many of that dino can spawn in an area, compared to the maximum number of creatures in the area. It is used to prevent overspawning, where one creature with a high spawn weight is picked over and over again and squeezes all other creatures out. 1.0 is 100%, effectivley no limit. 0.5 is 50%, which means the game will pick any creature to spawn in the area until the number of that creature equals 50% of the maximum number of creatures which can spawn. At that point it will stop spawning that creature and fill up the remaining slots with other creatures on it's spawn list instead.

The SPAWNENTRY and ENTITYID fields need you to add an _C to the end of them, in order for the game to read them properly. So for example, the SPAWNENTRY 'DinoSpawnEntriesBeach' needs to be input as 'DinoSpawnEntriesBeach_C'.

As an overall example, here's a code which adds Aberration Ravagers to the canyon area in Ragnarok, as quite a rare spawn:

When adding multiple creatures to the same spawn point, it's important to remember that you can only have one config for each SPAWNENTRY in your file. It you have multiple, the game will operate the first one and ignore the rest. So you have to add multiple creatures into the same config to make it recognise them all.

This is done in this way:

So for example, to add the creatures you mentioned above to the beach spawn node:

Cant believe no one has already one an ini file for this lol.
Just waiting for work to finishso I can actually create the code (tried a few times but with this tablets annoying habit of missing spaces and low ram it was too much lol )

So far this is my code*, not tested fully and more needs to be added. Its a really long and slow process.

Best advice to anyone that wants to edit (or even better help) use notepad++ to edit your game.ini, and set the language to json, the syntax highlighting makes it easier to read and if you add an incorrect ) it will add a + as it thinks its a new section ...that is not a guarantee but better than nought.

My current ini is attached, word of warning, My config may not be to your tastes lol but should allow anyone who wants to get a headstart and not have to re-invent the wheel...that said, feel free to use it, share it what ever. Never understood why some server admins choose not to share stuff that would save others hours ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

*some of it is from another server admin.

  • This may helped you a wee bit faster...

Most use ASM (Ark Server Manager), then export the code. And yes, you can use ASM on a PC. They copy that code to the console ini.

NOTE: On consoles they have a limit on how many lines they may add. What that limit is, I do not know.

Used that before on pc, it kept resetting values.....but that was a long time ago. looks like its been upgraded since. Should make creating the spawn list easier :).
    Thank you

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users can download the update today at 10am PDT, 1pm EDT, 6pm BST, 7pm CEST.

The Valguero map comes with more space to run around, a new creature, and more.

The 63 km map features new biomes, dungeon bosses, ruins, and environmental hazards such as snowfields and lava flows. The new creature is Deinonychus, a feathered theropod, and is found only in Valguero.

Valguero started life as a mod for Ark: Survival Evolved, and the update is already available for PC.

Studio Wildcard said Valguero will arrive as a regular game update, which means you won't need to download anything special from the marketplace.

The Ark Valguero Expansion Map Includes

  • Expanded Exploration: Over 63 square kilometers of new land and sea to explore!
  • Peaks and Valleys: Eight Biomes with a vast array of climates and dangers - tread lightly through the hazards of Skeleton Gorge, see the vistas on top of the Twin Peaks or find remnants of the past at the Lost Temple.
  • Triple Threat Boss Challenges: A boss arena where players face an  epic battle against a Megapithecus, Manticore and Dragon in this heavy-hitting, triple threat encounter! Face familiar dangers in the End-Game Boss encounter in an entirely different way!
  • New Dinosaur - Deinonychus: Encounter the ill-natured Deinonychus! Similar to the raptor, it uses speed and agility to leap wall ledge to wall ledge as it seeks high vantage points to lie in wait for prey. This contentious beast is fearless and will hunt prey much larger than itself, latching onto a larger dinosaur’s back with its sickle-shaped claws as it starts to feed before its victim is even dead.
  • Into The Trenches: A large network of caves to spelunk as you delve into unexplored territory featuring different themes and varied perks, including the extensive Aberration Trench.
  • Secrets From the Ancient Age: Explore scattered ruins throughout the world of forgotten Valguero survivors.

Alongside the release of Valguero, perks will be doled out starting today through Monday, July 22. All official servers across each platform will see double Harvesting Rates, Taming Rates, and EXP Rates.

In the announcement, the developers also noted duping exploits were being looked into. The engineering team is looking at potential fixes and will take action on the duping as "swiftly as possible."
